Such a thing as a silent search PI?

Ok, I'm looking at perhaps getting a PI machine, was thinking about a sand shark, and doing some research on them. From what I have seen on videos, they have this loud threshold tone and targets sound off with a sort of buzzing sound. Best way to describe it, sounds like the all metal search mode on a vlf machine such as any tesoro vlf with all metal mode. I don't care for that mode and dislike using all metal mode so the question is this: Are there any PI machines that dont have this type of search feature? I'm looking for something that is like my Tesoro Tiger Shark in discriminate mode. As in the machine is silent until it encounters a target then it elicits a beep to indicate a target was detected. I've only hear the VCO mode on the Sand shark and it has the unfavorable tone in my opinion. Maybe the normal mode has the silent search with a beep to indicate a target?? Any input would be appreciated.

I'm used to silent search mode also.. at least until I got a Sovereign. It took some getting used to, but I love that detector after seeing what it could do.
Now with my Sand Shark, I had to get used to the tone and threshold, but after some time I don't pay any attention to it now.
You can set how loud you want the threshold just like most other threshold based detectors and I guess you could just turn it until it goes silent, but you may lose some depth.
The normal mode is also threshold based, but does not have the VCO. The tone never changes pitch, but changes in volume depending on target size and depth..most seem to prefer VCO mode and I favor that mode also.. the pitch can be adjusted in the normal mode in case you are unaware of this.
Only thing I notice is the threshold is not as steady as my Sovereign, but again not a big issue with me.
Only been out a few time with it so far and love this little detector and looking forward to using it later this year at the saltwater beaches.

You may want to try the White's Surf PI Pro or Dual Field. It works and sounds about as close to a VLF as any PI I've had.

Ok thanks for the suggestions. I'm digging to find videos showing or allowing me to hear the sounds of the different machines. I did not know the Excal also had the threshold style of hunting as well; I had my eye on one of those too but a second water machine like a PI would cost a lot less.
