Was cleaning some of the wheats I found yesterday and noticed one in particular. I could clearly see a 19*4 and a "bump" on the bottom (d?). Was not visible but how to clean in case it was a "d" and 1914? I decided to mix some vinegar and salt to see if it would do the trick. Did not leave it long , maybe 2-3 minutes while I put the rest of the pennies in my small bucket and went to rinse it out with water. Got my loupe and looked again. Dang it now there was no "4" or "bump" . completely melted away. Stupid stupid!!! :ranting:

Sorry about that one,

I've always had good luck with a soft nylon bristled brush and soap&water, better luck next time.

Vinegar and salt is the absolute worse thing for any kind of copper coin .. and I think everyone learns that the hard way at least once. Bummer ..

Next time try microwaving about half a cup of hydrogen peroxide for 20 to 30 seconds and dropping the coin into it until you get the desired effect..

or you can go to buffaloe wild wings and get a sample of there blazing sauce. drop a penny in it for a minute or two pull it out and wipe it off. be sure not to get sauce on your face it is rough. cleans as good as anything I have found. this is no joke it really works.

Be sure to use rubber gloves.....you dont want that stuff on your skin!!

Lemon juice and water mixed 50/50 works good to. You just cant leave it there very long. Anything that may be key date, soap and water only.

Hydrogen peroxide is the way to go. Does no damage to the coin. Put a little olive oil or other oil on copper as seems to need it.
