Stupid question

I guess this must be a stupid question because I asked it on the Tesoro forum and got no help so I will ask here. I have a Minelab xterra 70 I had to send it in for repair, no big deal xcept I had to borrow a machine and I hate to borrow anything. Someone offered a machine and I reluctantly borrowed it, a co worker then let me borrow his Tesoro Sidewinder umax.I have never used a tesoro so I asked him if it was multi tone and he just gave me a "you must be kidding" look. I hunt at night and just want a tesoro detector as a back up that has multi tones, no TID. I have heard great things about this brand and thought I would like to try one. So why is this such a dumb question? I am new to the hobby, I am on my 4th set of batteries on my machine, I once owned a Whites years ago and had some fun and decided to try the hobby again.I even went to the Tesoro web site and could not find mention of more than one tone at least on the machines I read about.

I'm going to guess that it's because this tesoro user has never used a tone-ID machine, and thus, doesn't know the benefits of TID. Having been on both sides of the fence, I can relate to his skepticism. It would go along along the lines of 1) "how stupid is that? You're going to dig it up and look at it anyways, so why do you need to know TID/conductivity? 2) "oh no! if you passed something that sounded junky (d/t the TID sound), you might miss something good!" etc...

I can say that ........ even for places where a person intends to "dig all above iron", the TID is STILL fun and effective. I have been in relic hunt environments with non-TID persons, and without a doubt, my Explorer spanked them. I ended up with more coins and buttons, while they ended up with the lions share of can-slaw in these furroughed fields (which were on the site of a 1790s-1810s indian trading village). When we'd compare total targets dug, we'd always be about the same. So neither of us could understand why I kept coming in with the better targets, since we were both "digging all". It finally occured to each of use, that I, having TID, was subconsciously......... as long as targets were prolific and numerous, was subconsciously favoring the better "round/coin" sounding signals. But he on the other hand, had no such tell-tale sounds and tones. Targets either "beeped" or "didn't beep", with no inbetween judgement factoring. So while neither of us passed the slightest beep in this relicky environment, the person with TID had the choice to hone in, when numerous back-to-back signals abounded, to dig the "nicer" sounding stuff.

Just one example of the bennies of TIDs, that a long-time Tesoro user wouldn't be akin to. Their first inclination of TID would be to think of the newbie passing pulltabs, and thus missing a gold coin, or whatever.

I am sure that there are a lot of great helpfull folks in that forum as there is here I am just not farmiliar with the Tesoro line of detectors.I have borrowed one and am going to use it Saturday night but I believe it is a single tone. I simply would like to know if Tesoro makes a multi tone unit. I kinda feel bad because I was a little short in my response but as I explained I just recently had to place my 88 year old Mother in a home and I hated it.I know I have to pay attention to my lack of patience for a while.I will find a machine to purchase as a spare if you will. Thanks for the input.

Sure they do. My first multi-tone was a Tesoro Golden Saber with no visuals. I think you can do better with a multi-tone only than with a visual only. I'm using a B.H. Big Bud Pro 2, that has both, multi-tone is the only way to go. Once you've had "Neapolitan" it's hard to go back to "Vanilla" :wiggle:

The Tesoro Golden Sabre umax is multi tone. I haven't used one, but have read many positive statements by those that have.
