Stupid question when to dig

I'm new to my SE also but I experienced this and seen it to be most cases your maybe getting the edge or tip off a piece of iron or other object and it gives a high tone. Or it could be keeper with trash. Until you get to know your MD better and the
area your detecting in better to dig those iffy signals to be sure.

the last one way i dug was a good signal going north or south but nothing east or west. tornrd out to be a large rusty bolt.

Bolts and bent nails seem to be the most difficult to distinguish. You will learn the tone of larger iron bounce if you are using CON sounds. I use the depth meter when checking those signals.... normally you can discount those signals under 6 inchs just because the explorer does very well at TID. However on edge coins and coins next to trash deeper will give you veried TID readings. So if you are getting a constant good tone... dig it. More than not you may get bolts... but those other times its a deep keeper. Anyone new needs to dig those signals and pay attention to the depth and tone of the target.... like is it breaking up and staying to the left on the TID.

Learn the hard way, laziness doesn't pay off.. Dig and experiment for yourself.
I dig if it sounds good.:detecting:

A coin on edge will often give only a signal east-west but nothing or not much north-south.....just depends on how much digging your ready to do at the time...
