Stumped

I had a strange thing happen today and I hope someone can explain to me what might have happened. I was hunting at one of my regular sites, my AT Pro was working great. I moved to another site and tried to ground balance but it wouldn't do anything. I tried both auto and manual with no results. I tried backing off my manual numbers to 40 and then auto GB but it wouldn't move off 40. The area should have been around 68. I moved to another site and it worked fine. It's sure got me stumped.

Sounds like some sort of EMI problem to me. I had a similar thing happen to me. In a certain park my detector went Nutzo with all kinds of weird readings happening about 100 times a minute. Walked across a street to a vacant lot. No problems. Walk back to the park. Problem starts again.

Has never happened anywhere except that park.

I had something similar happen in that I mean the detector wouldn't respond to me trying to GB, adjust sens and even turn it off.....it had never did that before until i was in a specific place at a specific park. Turn out there was some sort of antenna on the side of the concession stand that was interfering from what I could tell. A few weeks later I ran into a guy with a Whites machine and he stated that there must be something under the playground there as he gets a lot of interference in that same area. My guess is that there was some sort of interference...cell tower, cell phone etc.

EMI can really cause problems for ALL metal detectors. Try switching frequencies to see if it helps. Otherwise, you will have to hunt the area with the sensitivity set as high as you can.

Could be an underground power cable nearby. I've an underground dog fence and no detector i have will work near it.

Thanks guys for your input, I'm sure you are all right. I had never had a detector act that way but I assumed it might be the problem. I went back to the site and It appears to only affect the ATpro because I tried another brand machine and it worked ok.

The same thing has happened to me a few times. It happens at random times and places, it's so weird. Once the thing starts going bonkers, I have to turn it off for at least 20 minutes. Changing location seems to do nothing to improve it for me, and this is happening at places that I have hunted MANY times before without trouble. I'm going to send mine in for the upgrades in the fall...until then I will have to put up with the problem...it doesn't happen too often.

Is it possible, if there is an EMI in the area and the higher frequency of the DD coil on the AT Pro compared to the lower frequency and a concentric coil that was on the other brand would cause one to work and the ATpro not to work? The other brand also had to be GB.

I've noticed to I can't gb in some areas. Usually a small area in a larger area I'm hunting. Set the gb where it usually is. I haven't had problems hunting in these areas.

in Houston that has a big Fire station half way between them. The only they can be is with older detectors because the radios towers.

Took my ATpro back to the site where I couldn't GB it the other day, just to see what would happen and it worked. No problem ! Maybe what ever was causing it not to GB the first time such as a EMI was turned off. I got to hunt this site, what a difference. I'm glad I tried it again.
