Stripping Excalibur 1000 Battery Pod

Neilo

Has any one had the experience of stripping down the Excalibur 1000 battery pod. My nicad cells are beginning to fail and I want to replace the with Nimh. How does the black ring come off? Is it screwed on or is it pressed into place. It looks like there are some screws underneath it, I assume once those scews are removed the end cap and O ring will come out allowing you access to the battery pack. If I send it to minelab they will only put nicads back in place,I can get a pack made up with Nimh cheaper by a battery merchant and put it back together myself.seeya Neilo:ausflag:

there is just a little glue holding on the the black cap just go around it with a small knife and it will come off then you will see two Allen set screws take them out and wiggle the cap off do not unscrew I replaced mine with a nickle metal 1000 mah at a battery plus don't know whats there for you maybe a radio control shop hobby shop also go to a dive shop and get some silicon grease but it take very little just a film of the grease also there is a thermal fuse in the positive line best to take your batts and let them copy it use the fuse thats there HH RonC you can also use alkaline in a pinch get a holder from whites that holds 8 1.5 AA 12v clip it in works great

Ron thanks for your help, you said you replaced yours with 1000 ma battery, was that a single cell 12volt battery or a pack made up of cells. It would be a lot better if it could be replaced with one big 12volt cell but it is getting one the right size thats the problem.I had a quote on a pack of 10 cells at 1600ma, it was certainly cheaper than the minelab nicad pack at 600 ma. seeya neilo:ausflag:

that is 10 1.2 v they are the short batts I dont think the AA size will fit also your old batt are 700 nicad best just to have your batts with you when new ones are made I also had made for my sunray pod 2050 mah HH RonC

thanks Ron those short fat battery cells are called half A size, what do you use as a charger have you got a special one or are you useing the nicad charger.I have got a nimh charger for my Explorer It carges at 15v 100 ma it would take a while to charge up a 1600 ma battery, I suppose it would be alright. thanks again, its 12.40 am here in Australia so I will go now and get some sleep seeya Neilo:goodnight:

It is made from ten 1400 mah AA cells. No thermal fuse was on my older original pack so this one doesn't have one either. You can see where they had to reverse the wires because they got the polarity wrong even after I told then the clip has to be wired in reverse. I charge it with the charger that came with my Excalibur. It has an output of 150 MA. To calculate the charge time, add 40% to the battery capacity and then divide by the output of the charger. This will give you the hours of charge time. The 40% compensates for inefficiencies in the charging process.

Don't make the screws that hold the cap on the pod too tight. They act as pins that keep the cap in place. If they are too tight they can crack the plastic. The black band is there to keep the screws from working loose.

I use a sunray Q-12 its a great charger @400mah and then a trickle charge has a green light that blinks when it is done to bad sunray dosnt make them any more but maybe they will have a new one soon HH Ron

Thank you for the tips on the screws the double A batteries look like a very tight fit to me, but it is hard to tell. The heat fuse is that fitted inside the original pack underneath the electrical connector.I will take the whole thing down to the battery pack co and see what they suggest.I think the double A set up will be the way to go, I should imagine they will be cheaper as well. thanks again seeya Neilo

I don't know much about the heat fuse because my older battery packs didn't have them. It must be something Minelab started doing more recently. The AAs are a tight fit. Whoever builds the pack for you will probably need the tube to help hold the cells in place while they connect them together. Don't have them shrink wrap the pack because the added thickness will prevent it from fitting inside the tube.

They made another pack with the original type 2/3AA cells. That pack is 1000 mah nickel metal hydride. I keep labels on each pack with the charge time. - John
