Street Tear Out..not sidewalk. Thoughts?

Hello All,

I live in a city that was 'Established in 1837" - which is pretty cool...not many parks open to MD'ing. Working on some homes for permission. In the meantime, I just noticed last night that one of the streets has been torn out...I'm sure to lay new pavement shortly. Not the sidewalk though...or the sidewalk strip. Any of you have experience with this? Think it might be a productive strategy? Any thoughts, tips or opinions would be appreciated. Thank you all...

Yea, hunt it before everyone else does.

Around here that project would draw MD'ers like a road kill armadillo draws vultures! Jump on it. :detecting:

Haaaaaaaaaa....that's priceless!!! So, sorry guys, one more follow up....would you expect it to be 'trashy'? Not sure if I should use my SEF or my 5" Excelerator ???? Still laughing at that one.....

Most all road tear out projects that i've been on are lame. Because they rarely tear out down to original terra firma. You see..... since roads are engineered to handle heavy vehicles (as opposed to light weight pedestrians), they are built on thick layers of compacted decomposed granite . Rarely do they need to dig out deeper than that. If the soil you see doesn't look "native"; then you will know it's just fill dirt.

I tried a street tear out in the city where I work but they never got down to dirt and the big pieces of iron and wire made it almost impossible to hunt. I would give it a try, maybe they did better where you are !!

Tom, but where did the fill dirt come from?????? I've found many 1800's coins in fill dirt.

Also I never pass up a street tear out, at least check it out. Last week I found a 1854 Seated Half Dime in a street tear out and a 1886 Key Date V nickel.

Take both coils with you and make that determination once you start your hunt.

Well, you never know if you don't go. I don't bother with them in my area anymore. All the engineered (as apposed to just poured over the top othe original dirt path) roads around here were originaly dug down so deep that they are just sterile ground when the pavement is removed.

My Grandfather used to tell a story about an honest storekeeper in our small hometown back around 1910. He and his brother were walking across Main Street when Great Uncle Bill spied a coin laying in the dirt street. Picking up what he thought to be a nickel , they beelined to the nearest store to buy some penny candy. What they thought to be a nickel was acknowledged by the storekeeper to be a five dollar gold piece! Every time I drive down this street I remember that story and pray for the opportunity like the one you have! HUNT IT !

I jave found a lot on sidewalk tearouts, but never in the street, even when taken clear to the dirt, not sure why, but I always try!

Ok - loud and clear guys!! Gonna go tonight at dark and swing it for a few! I'll let you all know if anything hits! Stay tuned and thanks for the advice!!!!

Well, unfortunately it seems they only tore off the paved layer. When I checked it out I was detecting through compacted sand, rather than old looking dirt! Only ran a small section and only pulled a couple modern clad pieces. Was definitely worth a try! Thanks for the opinions all...good luck this weekend if you're diggin'....
