Strange quarter....

Today I took my MXT out after work to an old railroad site I've been hunting occasionally. I found some nice artifacts, three 1912 Elks tokens, a nice old cufflink and a really WEIRD quarter. I haven't taken a photo yet because it's pretty cruddy, and I don't want to clean it until I know what I have here. The back is an 1885 Seated Liberty, but the front is Mexican! I can't read how many centavos but it is NOT an overstrike. It is dated 1902 on the front. I'll try to take a good photo tomorrow when it's light, but I don't want to clean it yet, so it will look a bit crummy.

Has anyone seen anything like this? I've seen overstrikes but this appears to be an original mint strike. It also has an obviously later addition of the letters "LEY" punched into the shield (or whatever) of the front design.

?????

Take pictures and post them here. That's cool! Thanks, Nancy

Not a strange quarter BUT a 1902 Silver Mexican Peso, Obverse eagle with snake in its beak, reverse is Liberty cap and sun rays. .903 Silver, 39mm, mintage 16.224. (Found this info on fleBay)... 'Ley' in spanish is 'Law'

Ok....NOW I feel foolish!! I couldn't see very well through the crud, but it IS Mexican. The eagle is not Ameircan, but Mexican. I was confused by what I thought was two dates, but I can see now it is really a silver 25 centavos dated 1885. What I thought was 1902 is really 902.7 (silver content) along with part of the Mexico City mint mark, and ALL cover with crud.

Shucks!! My "rare" coin suddenly evaporated!

Sorry for jumping the gun.

Marc

I'd say that any1800's Mexican coin dug up this side of the border is rare.

Ok....here's my "strange" quarter after a little, not much, cleaning.

I'll try to upload pics of some other finds yesterday, also.

Some other "stuff" I eeked out of the old train site....

I found a total of four Elks tokens, all for the same Bazaar in 1912.

The cufflink (I think) appears to be copper, with someone riding a "Penny-Farthing" bicycle.

Lots of old shotgun shell heads, some really unusual, and several rimmed black powder casings for 45 Colt, etc.

Anyway, thanks for looking.

Marc
