Strange old item and some silvers

Cutaplug

New member
Found a few whatsit items at a town that's been there since the early 1800's and not sure what they are. Also pulled 3 silvers and a few other goodies.

Nice finds!
Not sure on the large item on the left, looks lo
ike it has some writing on it,maybe Guaranteed something.
The one with all the slotted holes at the bottom is a reed out of a harmonica.
The one at the top is a Miners Tag.
They would hang those on a nail outside the mine before they went in.That way if something happened they would know who was in there.

Nice finds RC! Thanks for the pictures and videos.

Thanks for the info =) The large item says "Guaranteed nickel silver" but it doesn't look like nickel silver to me. The copper was so deteriorated I thought it was leather it was so soft. Any idea on the age of the miners tag?

Nice finds.

That tag may be a cattle tag....but I am thinking possibly some type of voucher or tax ID token for head count, etc.

Critique:
RCDetector/Cut-A-Plug, you should really use a Lesche. You can get a foot down with them.
A shovel in a park? :nono:
That one hole was a bit messy. Not trying to be a jerk, but you have to consider how it looks to passerby's/groundskeepers.
There are countless parks closed to detectorist's due to bad digz.
"Trap Door" plugs are the way to go as the roots and grass are still attatched to one side. A good slam with the foot after filling in the hole,
and it looks like noone was there. As well, it will not come back up when the lawn mower blades whack it.

Not saying I do not respect your finds or your talent, but it is our responsibility to do it neatly to preserve the hobby.

After watching the vid I guess the hole was a little messy but I always "repair" the hole if the plug falls apart. I started with a predator hand tool and the ground was really sticky thick clay and hard to dig so I went to the shovel. The shovel I have is a Leche t-handle sampson pro so it actually has the same blade size as the predator hand tool. People may have a different perception, but in reality probably better to dig a clean hole. After using it for a year now I have never been run out of any parks or had one complaint. The person I got the idea from was a club president who always hunted parks with one so I never thought there was anything wrong it. Am I totally wrong here? I usually solo hunt and haven't really met up with a lot of people who have been doing this for many years so don't get to trade ideas... Is it frowned upon in the MD community to use a spade in a park? If so maybe I'll reconsider

That large piece is a Shoe insert for your feet.
Found one like it ealrier in the season.
Scrub it good and you will see the makers name on it.

Thanks for the info :) Most shoe inserts I've seen were wood. Does that part go inside the wood or something? Not sure exactly how it works.

Nice finds RC!
I have been wondering how long it would be before someone mentioned the shovel and the holes. You have been quite lucky RC to have made it this long without it being mentioned.
But, Coilfisher is right, we recently had one of the best parks in Mo closed to metal detecting all because of one person. Her status in the community is very high and shes a member of the local historical society. So everything we can do to better our image is going to help.
Also Historical societys and local museums like donations, I recommend all of us who have civil war relics and anything of historical value thats just setting in a bucket gathering dust not doing anyone any good donate all or some to your finds to your local or county museums.

Thanks for the feedback Djay  Most of the places I hunt, even if I'm in a park are way off the beaten path and haven't seen foot traffic in 50+ years. When I'm in an area that is well groomed and more public I try to cut a good plug and make the hole completely unnoticiable when finished, even if it is a large plug. The way I see it is if someone wouldn't notice that it had been cut standing 5 foot away I'm good to go. The last coin I scratched before switching from a hand digger to a shovel was an 1877 S Seated Half Dollar. It's worn so not too valuable but scratching that type of find is still enough to make a person sick :puke: I've found 180+ silver coins this year and can remember maybe 1-2 scratches. That being said my wife bought me a new leche predator for my b-day a few weeks ago so I might try using it more. I'll keep what you guys have mentioned in mind and try to cut some cleaner plugs

Here is a pic of that nasty scratch. One of my best coins ever and hopefully will be lucky enough to run across another someday :)

BEAUTIFUL COIN:drool

I Get The Scratch Issue And I Applaud You :clapping:For Your Consideration And Willingness To Listen

I was thinking the large tag might be a brass cattle tag, do a search on ebay for vintage cattle tag.....some very similar looking items, breat finds....love the seated!

I did not copy and rotate your picture but, it even appears to say LEFT stamped into the metal after probably the makers name.
Here is a picture of what a complete set looks like.
These also are antique.
