Strange Coin

New member
I found this coin in a local park. Initially, I thought it was a rusted dime (almost exactly the same size) since the figure resembles FDR but upon closer inspection, it is has significant differences. Unfortunately, there is no writing on the front or back. Can anyone help identify this?
Thanks
Chuck

I may be wrong, but it looks like a clad Roosevelt dime that is in rough shape, to me. I enlarged and enhanced the picture you had.

Around here, all clad coins turn rusty brown after a few years in the dirt. Looks like that one got scratched up somewhere along the way as well. Can you see any date on it? Is it a "sandwiched" coin like other clad coins? What are those significant differences you mentioned? HH Randy

Randy,
Upon closer inspection, I do think that it is the profile of FDR. The "differences" that I mentioned are probably due to the fact that the coin is in such bad shape. What still puzzles me is that there are no signs of writing even under high magnification. The signal was copper (34-36) which leads me to believe that it might be a counterfeit coin.

Appears to be some green corrosion which might indicate copper under the clad. Maybe you could use an emery board or file on the reeded edge on the back of FDR's head where coin appears to be damaged.

Build an electrolysis machine out of an old computer power supply. cut off all the wires but one black and one red 12 volt, may be yellow...put alligator clamps on both.
get a bowl and fill with salt water. Connect the coin to the - black wire and put it in the water then connect the red wire to a piece of stainless steel (less corrosive) and drop it in the water.
the coin will start to bubble..good if not switch the wires...the corrosion will be attracted to the SS therefor cleaning the coin. check it about every 20 mins.you may have to move the alligator clamp around the coin for best results. also i would do this in a garage or well ventilated area.

good luck!

Have used a model train transformer with all else being the same as above. Is one power supply better than another?
