strang black rock

homerule

Member
hi everyone,
i was metal detecting in a field, and i saw a black rock.it didn't come up on the detector, i just spotted it.
i washed it, and it has a shiny black surface, it is very light for its size. would any one have any idea what it is?
there are a few more in the field, in different shapes.
thanks for any help,
john

If it chips at the edge like glass then it's Obsidian, if it flakes apart in stratas then it's Anthracite Coal(high grade coal preferred by Navies in the age of steam).

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you found it on the beach. If you're close to a warship wreck site or naval station the chance of it being Anthracite increases naturally.

hi bdahunter,
thanks for the help, i google imaged anthracite, and it look identical to the piece i found.
thanks
john
