Straight shaft or over and under for excal

Hey guys, just wondering which shaft to purchase with my new excal II.
I like the Anderson carbon fiber over and under model, but was wondering if it is balanced as well as the straight shaft model.
Any input from the experts will be appreciated.

You might want to look in the Excalibur Accesseries sticky in the Sovereign/Excalibur forum at the top of the message listings. Buch of pics of various shaft setups and thread links to threads where people debated and offered opinions on the best way to set it up for them (over and under and so on). Lots of good thread links to that sort of topic in there. The two heavy hitters in Excalibur or Sovereign shafts are Anderson and Plugger, and both of which are sold by Findmall sponsors. You can see a bunch of pics of their various shafts right in that sticky, and then thread links to read further on who likes what.

I used to run straight shafts on my Excals, but after trying one of Plugger's over/under uppers I think I can say I prefer it to the traditional straight shaft. I purchased the 3 piece dive/over under combo so I have the flexibilty to go from wading to diving by just switching the lower shaft. That's come in really handy a few times when I transitioned from deeper water to an area where I could wade and use a scoop.

I will say that the balance on the behind the elbow shafts is better for beach hunting, but I prefer to have a little bit of weight on the coil when I'm water hunting. If you really wanted to take a bit of weight off the coil on an over/under shaft you could always add a weighted extension out the back of the upper when beach hunting and remove it when in the water. I use my GT on the beach, so I've never really had the need to do so.

I have tried both Anderson & Plugger & I much prefer the plugger both in balance, quality & durability.as well as price.

I have used an Anderson over/under and a Plugger straight travel shaft. I much prefer the balance of the straight shaft. I now use the 3 piece straight travel shaft from Plugger for both of my Excal's. They are sturdy, break down for travel, and can be configured to use an optional chest mount.

I feel that Anderson and Plugger both make quality shafts for the Excal. However my nod goes to Plugger: great products, super pricing, and unbelievable customer service. For example after receiving my first Plugger straight shaft I had a question about putting it together. I send him an email and next thing you know I had both an email response and personal phone call to help make sure I was good to go. And that was on a Sunday!

Plugger's shafts are some of the best. I really like his shaft locks that really stiffen the whole deal. No wobble and no sticking or breaking like the cam locks that are usually used.

Joe is one stand up guy who is good to deal with. He has quality products that I highly recommend.

I prefer the behind the elbow mount as it balances out the whole detector. I also like it in the water as it takes the control pod and battery out of the swing area making it easier to swing in the water and keeps the whole detector out of the way of the scoop.

But I also sort of like the chest mount idea. Makes swinging much easier especially in the water.

The History Channel recently had a show about several pirate ships that were sunk on purpose to prevent other ships from entering a bay on one of the islands where the pirates were active. Lots of neat stuff being found like cannons, cannon balls, pottery, full capped bottles and even gold coins. The detector of choice by the folks doing the recovery were Minelab Excalibur II's. That tells you a lot!

Ditto!

I have a couple of each however, going forward it's plugger.

The Anderson looks great when new but try taking one apart after a few spins on the beach. IF you can get the handle off you will damage the finish on the the shaft beyond any repair. You can hose it down till the cows come home but sooner or later the handle will become one with the shaft and what a mess if you need to take it apart!

My 2 cents!

Is this the over/under plugger rod?
