Stored Cortes

I bought a brand new Cortes about 8 years ago, perhaps more. I had every intention of using it but I got married, had 2 kids and 8 years later I pulled it out of storage. I have kids now that are old enough to go with me (3 and 6) and I want to start introducing them to the hobby. My question is about the detector. Should I send it in to Tesoro to have them "tune" or "check" the unit? I think I took it out once or twice when it was brand spanking new and that is all it has been used. Do they go out of tune or do they need any kind of maintenance if they have been stored for a long time?

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Rob,

I'd hope that the batteries were taken out before the long term storage.

I'd just put in new batteries in it and fire it up and use it, I have a Toltec 100 that is at least 25 years old, works like new.

I'd get out the manual and see where the bars and numbers are suppose to be on certain targets and do some air testing with them. I remember mine being pretty darn accurate on target ID and it got good depth as well.

Should be good to go if you stored it with the batteries removed.

Minas man.

Actually I was horrified when I opened it and saw four double A's in the first compartment. They were perfectly fine and none had leaked, I then gently pried off the cover on the second compartment and to my surprise they also were fine. No leaks, no swelling and the compartment was clean as could be, all the contacts look good as well. Do you have any suggestions for a test I can perform to make sure it is going as deep as it should or that it is calibrated correctly? I live in AZ where the ground is pretty mineralized.

Thanks for the prompt reply and for your advice.

Rob

I have the Deleon, actually it's my wife's machine but I use it some. They basically are the same as the Cortes, mine will air test inside the house with standard coil about 9 inches on a dime, a little better with a nickel, In my moderate soil I can expect to get 8 inches on a dime, AZ soil I don't know.

8-9" on a dime in airtest is what it should do. I got a cortes a few weeks ago and really like it, had a minor issue with it and sent it in to Tesoro. No biggie. It is my most favourite tesoro I have used to date, the only thing it lacks (IMO) is the audio some of the older units had.
I found the tid to be very acurate and goes as deep and deeper than I want to dig. For park/ homestead hunting it has to be one of the most enjoyable detectors I have ever used.

Well, I dusted off the Cortes, installed fresh batteries and took it out today. It did not seem to be working as well as I would have liked so I did and air test.

I took a wooden ruler and measured with a dime. The best I could get was 3 1/2 inches with the settings as shown in the picture. When I cranked sensitivity up all the way to 10 it got a dime in the air at about 4 1/2 inches. This was outside and away from any metal. I think something is wrong but I wanted to ask here before I called Tesoro. Any ideas?

I can't tell by the picture but the Threshold should be set at a just audible volume, Disc. is a little high, I like to run mine a point between Min and Iron, usually run the Sens. at 7 or 8, should air test at least 8 inches on a dime.

Thanks for the reply Hombre.

What do you mean "Threshold should be set at a just audible volume"? No matter where I set threshold the volume remains the same. You should be able to enlarge the picture by clicking at the bottom.

Put it in all metal and adjust to a slight hum sound.... all explained in the manual.
