Wow this is a day I will remember!
Today I went to a park to hunt for a short while. I decided to change coils, so I set my metal detector on the ground and took the Velcro strips off and set them on the ground. I pulled out the other coil out of my truck and hooked it up to the detector. I looked for the Velcro strips - but they were gone! I saw movement out of the corner of my eye - about 6 feet away, a tree squirrel had both of the strips in his mouth and he was sitting there looking at me. Then he took one and began to chomp on it like someone eating an ear of corn! (I could hear the crunching). He dropped the one he wasn't eating, so I nabbed it; one down - one to go. I circled around the truck and managed to surprise him by loudly saying Boo! and taking a step toward him. He dropped the Velcro and tried to retrieve it, but I quickly picked it up. I put the Velcro strips on the detector. One of the strips was partially missing a piece (right in the middle of the strip of course).
So now, the rest of the story!
I am all set up and began detecting. I saw the squirrel running back and forth between trees so I concentrated on digging a good signal. After I dug the coin, I stood up and suddenly he was standing right between my feet. I shoo-ed him off and picked up my detector. I made a few swipes back and forth and noticed there was no signal coming through at all. I thought "what the heck......". I checked my connection from coil to detector and it seemed fine. Then I looked down the shaft and noticed the little critter had bitten most of the way through the coil cord in not one but TWO places!! I like squirrels, but I had visions of being Yosemite Sam with his shotgun going after the varmint!
So - an expensive lesson - Don't trust squirrels! I'll have to dish out $175.00 for a new coil, unless I can get the cord repaired or replaced. The cord was cut most of the way through on one of the bites. *sigh* It came completely apart when I gave it to my husband to look at.
