Good question. Since "holes" of course (un-like turf) couldn't possibly be the reason. The answer they will cite you is:
Cultural heritage issues. Ie.: you *might* find something older than 50 yrs, thus depriving future generations from learning about their past via archie digs in that spot.
And I'll give you ONE guess as to how that silly train of thought dots-connected got on some state persons radar, as "needing a rule". Ie.: one guess to figure out why it ever occured to someone in the first place. Can you guess why it got on their desk as a "pressing issue" they needed to address?
NOTE: I COPIED AND PASTED MY FOLLOWING POST FROM ANOTHER FINDS FORUM. I just want to do the correct thing.
Hi John,
I responded to Casper-1 's same petition plea on Treasuredepot.com asking for some sort of verification since I could not find anything online concerning a change in MA Commonwealth codes. I got an ambivalent answer. The current code states:
CMR 304 12.11
"No Person shall use or offer to use metal detectors on Department property except at the discretion of the area Supervisor on designated swimming beaches and designated campsites. The Director may issue a special use permit authorizing archaeologically-related or geologically related activities."
The story goes that a friend of his was threatened by a ticket by a park ranger recently, yet the petition states the edict will not go in effect until July 2014. Something doesn't seem right. Before I sign anything to bother an assemblyman/senator/legislator/Secretary/etc., I need to know whether what I'm signing is true.
Look, I hope this is all "hokeum"...really; but can you verify that this is a legitimate "cause"? I metal detect in MA frequently and enjoy the opportunities. Thanks!
I signed it and posted the petition info on my FB page as well as my club's private FB group.
We have property in Dennis Port - mid cape. The national seashore is off limits as anything else administered by the National Park Service is. I hope this ban does not infringe on town owned and operated beaches. Dumb, pointless infringement on my life by a heavy handed government. What the proponents of this ordinance really deserve IMHO is not for polite company
They simply don't like the idea that us with metal detectors find things of value once in awhile!
They want it for themselves. You have the right to pay your taxes but, not keep gold/silver or $
without their knowledge. Land of the free right?
I've been through this whole thing before. It won't stop me because there is no harm caused.
I cant believe the threats & ,or excuses I've been given by authorities. What a joke!
Just sign it, screw moveon.org. I agree with you though, but who cares. We all have a common goal. If you have facebook, share it. I did tonight. Its total insanity to ban metal detecting. hh an gl -Joe
ps I am from ma.

Why is the uberleftist moveon involved? I am very suspect of any political action org (especially one as far out as moveon). I smell a data/info grab.
