Stock Coil Cover!!!!!

Jim Robertson

Well-known member
Has Garrett got the fited coil cover yet? The solid one is just to heavy for the coil it causes it to flop or drop. Any up dates? Thanks

I second this ----- by the time they come out with the fitted coil cover, I will have worn out the bottom of my coil! Are you listening Garrett? Website said it should be out by now....

I third this, guys ... I will need to have my coil replaced under warranty (again) if it wears down much further.

I don't think Garrett reads this forum or doesn't really care what people say or think.

did you have the stock coil replaced under warranty for wear or an faulty issue....SOCAL

I see there is an open cover that is now on the Garrett Website ?

They do read this forum and do care. They have redesigned the stock coil pivot point to make it more sturdy and less floppy.

Gorilla tape will protect your coil until you get the cover you desire, or use the one they have out now.

Hi dmnz ... my last coil was replaced under warranty because the rubber grommet/bushing in the pivot point of the coil was shredding (there is a picture in my earlier post "My ATX is back at Garrett for mostly self inflected repairs").
My first coil was really floppy or the coil would spring back to almost it's original location when the angle of the coil was adjusted. So I tighten the tension screw in or out to find a happy medium. Finally I just adjusted to tension screw back to it's original location and lived with it.
According to Sue, when Garrett looked at the coil when it was returned, they said I tighten to tension screw too much. While I was on the phone with Sue, I told her about the problem with the coil. I said it was a lousy design and Garrett needs to change it.

I spoke with some people at Garrett yesterday, and brought up the coil cover issue. The final coil covers are in the works, soon to be ready for shipping. In the mean time, use the current coil cover until the new ones are available.

Hi BK, Gorilla Tape on the coil would work for probably 99% of users out there except for me, of course :)

Last Fall when I first started using the ATX waiting for an Open Coil Cover to be available, I did put good quality Duct Tape on the coil, but the drag on the coil when sliding back and forth on the sand increased tremendously. My coil is in constant contact with the sand, especially the wet sand to scan as deep as possible. Anything other than a super smooth surface on the bottom of the coil wears you out quicker. It also helps take some of the weight off the machine while in contact with the wet sand.
On the wet slope of the most popular swim areas of the beach that get a lot of traffic, I scan very slowly while walking backwards down the slope with the coil in constant contact with the sand. The ATX always runs quiet rubbing the sand, but if you bump a larger shell or rock, you get a Twang sound.

Gorilla Tape would be a good choice for most

BK,

What did Garrett do to change the floppiness on the pivot point in the coils? Will the fix the ones already sent out with this flaw, if the coil is sent in?

Thanks,

The should send us some technical issues info, how to fix it or how to get fixed parts... for 2500 bucks spend I'm feel disapointed.

This is what I use to coat all of my beach coils. May void warranty but coil covers on the beach ar a pain betting full of sand and water.

Yup ... that's exactly what I was going to do once I wear down the original epoxy to the coil windings or after I finally get a open grid coil cover, which ever comes first :)

There is no way Garrett will replace my coil under warranty due to me sanding the epoxy down to nothing :)

Too Funny ... what a crappy job that guy did with that white epoxy. He could have least used black epoxy and masked off the sides and top of the coil :)

And in his case, mask off the wire and shaft also :)

Yea it is not pretty but it works. I use mine in the rocks a lot so I epoxy the all the way up the sides. Max is a great guy he uses his detectors as a tool don't have to look pretty just work.
Don't think he was concerned about the looks much just protection for the coil. It works have used it on man excal coils and my 6" for the CTX I use t in a area covered in rocks.

Yeah, he sounds like a very nice guy in the video. Maybe he was just making his equipment theft proof and easy to identify for recovery. If so, he did a fine job.
