Stingray II vs Tiger Shark...?

Just wondering what the Tiger Shark can better than the Stingray II. I don't think I would want a machine that was any more sensitive to small items than the SR II.

I noticed on the Tesoro site that the Tiger Shark has the coils hardwired to the detector leading me to believe that the coils cannot be field changed. The Tesoro site also lists multiple coils under accessories; how does that work?

Thanks
John (patiently waiting for detector to come back from Tesoro service...)

I owned the old Tiger Shark and liked it. The coil on it was changeable. It has high ratings in metal detector reviews.

I have since switched to a Sand Shark, the coils on the new water detectors are hardwired and have to be sent in to the factory as far as I know to be changed.

My understanding of the matter is that there is no difference in the electronics of the tigershark..It was just that the manufacturer of the waterproof connector decided to quit making them forcing Tesoro to start hard-wiring their coils in for lack of a connector

Or they had issues with them leaking and decided with a lifetime warranty in may be wiser to have a good solid connection?

I had 2 SR 2's, and Im on my 3rd TS (all w/interchangeable coils) and none, knock on wood, had an issue with leaky connectors....but maybe I got lucky.

Hmmm... I do know that some of their competitors still use waterproof connectors for the coils and head phones. Actually, the only beef I had with the Stingray's design was lack of changeable headphones and the housing design. I hate it that every time I open it up for whatever reason, I have to wipe down the o-ring and re-grease with silicon... well, and that some of the adjustment knobs were internal.

As far as the sensitivity, it will find stuff so small it will drive you bonkers trying to find it. Honestly, I believe it will find the "shadow" of an iron object that rusted out.

@Terry(MI) What were differences you noticed between the SRII and TS as far as capability?

It was'nt a leak problem, the vendor they bought the water proof connectors from, quit making them:rage:

its my understanding that the connectors werent an issue, only that they became unavailable, for those units..... I'd guess it would be a big headache to switch connectors on a current AND discontinued unit VS. hard-wiring them for future TS's.....But only Tesoro can say for sure.

Internal sensitivity controls on these units has always been a bit of a pet peeve w/me.... Aside from manual GB it is the sens that should be on the faceplate, and put the normal/salt switch internal.... and IMO the volume (headphones) were not loud enough to dive with on the SR2.... the bubbles always got in the way. Also, I rarely wiped and re-geled the seal when I had to open it up, just lightly clear the non-O-ring side lightly of sand and close it back up. People tend to over-think this when shallow water hunting, if your diving 20 ft down, then wipe both sides and re-gel. The biggest issue w/leaks is taking a unit out of a hot vehicle, and dunking it in cold water, or not securing the closure(s) before entering the water.

Aside from tonal differences, IMO the SR2 was better discriminator, and the TS has better depth.... but others may not agree. HH,

Terry

I've had my Tiger Shark for 11 years, no problems, no complaints, just solid engineering and a gold getter:thumbup:

Thanks, that helps. Sometimes get the erg to upgrade because the new one is bright and shiny...

Most of my hunting in the past has been beach and rarely used desc. Went to a park the other day with another guy I know that does a lot of park hunting. I gained a new respect for desc... also found out mine was not working. Kind of wanting Tesoro to hurry and fix it but glad they are taking their time to do it right... in the mean time, mind is wandering, wondering about a new machine.

Regarding the o-ring, I have a few friends that are underwater photogs and always hear the flooding stories ("...it's not if, it's when...") It tends to make one a little overly "

Several years ago one of the Giffords told me the Tiger Sharks circuitry is based on the Bandido. He didn't say which, but I always thought it was the Bandido 2 uMax. The Stingray II was based on an older machine. I've used both and found the Tiger Shark to be a little noisier. I personally regret having sold the Stingray. I did not experience a noticeable difference in depth between the two.

If you can find coils with the proper fitting you can change between coils very easily. But, Tesoro doesn't make the any more because the supplier of the fittings went out of business or stopped making them, either way they were no longer available. All new machines are hardwired.

I didn't notice a difference between the two models as far as cases. However, the very first units sent out had straight clamps that could catch on clothing an open. That was fixed, After that the clamps were made with a slight curvature bend at the end in toward the case. Again I don't remember if that was on the early Tiger Shark or the Stingray II.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,what does garrett do for them then????rgds :ukflag:

I have a Stingray 2 and I want to get a second machine. I like the stingray 2 so I was deciding between a tiger shark or a Sand shark. Should I go with basically the same (tiger shark) or something different (sand shark). Having 2 would be so someone else could use it with me and to have a another choice of a detector for myself. Which one? Thanks for your time.
