Still trying to learn(long)

I started running my Explorer in Ferrous Sounds, Gain about 7, settings on Fast only as I hunt some pretty trashy areas, and sens. on manual as high as the machine can handle it and remains stable.
So here's what I get: since I'm now hearing all of the iron sounds I have slowed way down, listening for anything higher than a low tone, and I keep hearing high tones on the end of iron sounds, which I hope represents false signals, since when I go back to them and attempt to pinpoint them, they are not consistent.
Also, a place I am hunting that has given up some Indians keeps giving me signals that show very deep on the depth meter, a mid-to high range tone, and consistent, stable crosshair in the upper right hand corner. However, when I dig these signals I never can find them. Either they are too deep or they are not where my pinpointing says they are. I pinpoint them both in the stardard disc. mode and "pinpoint." (standard 10.5" coil)
Also, I keep getting iron bottle caps which give sweet coin sounds, but the cross hair stays up in the left hand corner. Why, if they are iron?
ALSO,(whew), when I am trying to investigate a possible good signal that "sounds" like an iron target next to a good target, I also watch the depth indicator as I "wiggle" the coil, and I see that the depth indicator changes depth readings as if it is reading targets at different depths. Is this what is happening, and how accurate is this?
It seems that the only good targets I can get are ones up to 4" deep, but I believe I have been on some really deep ones, but the problem is digging a meteor crater in the front yard of the old apartment complex where the little old ladies are trying to take care of the shrubbery.
Any remedial assistance for an apparent mentally challenged misfit would be greatly appreciated. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">

Hang on... I understand your plight completely, and I have some information headed your way.

Greg:
Your comments seem familiar from people getting used to what the Explorer is telling you. Have you had a chance to read the book I put together on the Explorer series? If not, shoot me your E-mail address and I will send you a copy which should help you get over the hump and start getting the deeper targets.
Let me know what type of areas you typically hunt and what area of tennessee you are in and I will try to send you some specific tips and settings you can try.
