Got work all caught up so we could have a 3 day weekend and do the Eclipse thing. So I used those days to go hit several ghost town sites. And as luck would have it one of the old sites actually set only a few miles off the Eclipse Shadow center line. I got to say watching the eclipse and having 2+ minutes of totality was one of the neatest things I've seen. Looked like something right out of a sci-fi movie.

I hit 3 different sites in total and the Racer 2 got me another 1st. A 185? Large Cent. She is a little worn, but I'll take her. This site is one of the older dating sites in my area. It definitely was an unexpected surprise. You don't see too many popping out of the ground as you do over on the East Coast side. It was fun to just load up the dogs and go detecting and on the last day also watch an eclipse.

When it was all done, got the usual ghost town doo dads, 185? Large Cent, 1908 IH, 1907 V Nickel and a 1883 V Nickel. 1883 was the first year of the V Nickel and I ended up getting a "Racketeer V Nickel". The word "cents" is not printed under the V on the backside.

Nice going, Gregg! Would love to try out the western hunting environments someday. I live in west Michigan--much different here. I've been doing this since the late 70s and still have yet to find a largie. You'd think by now...

Thanks for sharing.

Gregg - Is this the same town that was so overgrown this past June? You're really slaying it. What coil were you using? Snake/Shrew or ?

Hi Kapok, well if ya ever get to Eastern Oregon, look me up. I'll take ya out to some nice ol' ghost towns.

Hi Tom how you been doing? The Indian Head came from " Lone Arch" The 1907 V from a site in Idaho. The Large Cent & 1883 V Nickel came out of the same site you found your 1875 seated dime, "Lone Tree". From where you found the dime, if you stood up and gazed down into the valley, I was down in there. I was using both the Snake coil and Core Point coil. I found the Large Cent first and went back a few days later to watch the Eclipse from there and found the 1883 V Nickel. Darby ( Mr. Capbust) also joined me that day and he got a couple nice Chinese Cash coins up in the area you found your coin but a little farther west. The site I think your thinking of is the one we call "Lost" it is still overgrown and almost impossible to hunt.

Heres a pic of "Lone Tree"

Gregg - My Seated dime was an 1865. You took ten years off it like it was nothing. :poke: I hope you're planning on putting that large cent back where you found it. I've never found one so I'd like the chance. I told my wife "I must be the only idiot in the world that would drive 2,000 miles round trip to find a dime" now I'll have to drive it again just to find a penny. Good luck on any future hunts and make sure you take any trash items you dig with you. That way there will be less of it I have to dig.

Lol, Tom my apologies for sniping ten years off your coin. But it was holed right on the date and hard to read. At least that is the excuse I'll use so I don't have to admit I'm getting old and forgetful :) Also it's only right to leave you some trash.....i don't want to deny you the whole treasure hunting experience.

Hi Brian. yep, it sure was a surprise. "Lone Tree" has produced not many coins that I am aware of, but the ones that have come out of there have been nice. This is actually the 2nd LC found at the site. Monte found the 1st one back in April of this year, a lot nicer condition 1853. Other than the 2 LC's , a 1836 cap bust dime, 1863,65,88 seated dimes. 1865 IH and 1883 V nickel. 8 coins that I know of.

Nice Going Gregg,

Glad to see you're still getting out and about. Heat down my way is easing off. I've been able to get in a LITTLE hunting the last couple days before work. Wife and I are selling the house and moving, so almost all my spare time is packing and sorting what to take, what to sell and what to toss.

I was looking at your location in relation to the eclipse and thought you and Monte would have plenty of visitors up your way.

Congrats on the large cent.

Hey Rich how you been doing? Yes, I was surprised at all the CA plates I seen that managed to make it back in there....I thought it was a secret spot lol. Yuk !!! moving, that has to be at the top of the "stuff I hate to do list" ...... move over this way and we can go hit some ghost towns.

At least all of those visitors didn't bring metal detectors with them. LOL

Moving is NOT high on my list of fun things to do. HOWEVER, that being said, Jill and I have found good timing and are getting out of the big city and moving small town. So, we are looking forward to this move rather than dreading it. I will be able to get my fly rods and fly tying gear back out and spend more time with my metal detectors as well.

I'm interested to see how you do with that 7" concentric coil Makro has out now.

As for moving you're way, Jill and I can't get THAT far away from work YET. We aren't on the retired list at this point, just moving closer. That doesn't mean that I can't make a road trip out your way though. And I have a hankerin to do another ghost town visit out in Nevada this fall.

Rich -

Ya I sure would like to get down that way one more time before we get real busy starting around the first of Oct. Maybe if you can get away some time early to mid-Sept, I'll meet you in Wells, NV a few days and we can hit a few places. I'll have the 7" coil by then and you can give it a go.

7" coil - Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha :heh:
