Still no good users manual for V3i (basic or advanced)

Well-known member
What ashamed! From what I can gather the V3i is the 2nd or 3rd highest priced high end detector available. And a good solid basic or advanced users manual is to no avail. I don't understand. And many have left the V3i and headed elsewhere. My hat's off to Larry and Robert for their posts in trying to explain some of the great features the V3i has. I guess if one wants to learn the detector they eventually will, but why should a person have to continually read tidbits here and there to unlock this detector? White's, it still not too late to get on the this, but time is running out. The original manual released with the V3i was substandard IMO to say the least. I do have advanced education and experience with electronics and physics so I can really see how users and potential users can struggle in getting the maximum performance out of their detector. And to think 7 years R&D was mention by the manufacturer in the development of the V3i. Didn't anyone take good notes and communicate this information into a single database for future consolidation to be eventually used in a good soild users manual?? And to think a warning shot was fired over the bow when the V3 was replaced with V3i. White's upon doing the change/upgrade they should have added a port for future firmware/software changes. Now look the Xp deus and minelab CTX have these capabilites. So much for cutting edge technology. White's could still do this with existing V3is. I would pay $200 for a good soild manual, a computer port and a detector checkup with me paying one way shipping. Besides if the V3i is that good why create another detector?

I agree. I felt the same way when I got my V3I. I think Whites assumed if we bought a V3I we already had a lot of information. What I found helped me was the VX3 Manual. This manual will answer a lot of your questions.

When you learn the machine it will surprise you. The only thing I seriously miss is a USB port. The deus and 3030 I don't think they're all that.

Between, the on board manual, the V3 manual, the VX3 manual, and the forum I don't know what anyone more one would need. It is how I learned what I need.

It is the nature of the beast, if a better book could be written it would have been done and would be making money for someone.

Jeff wrote the DFX and MXT manual, but never completed his promised V3i manual. If one came out now I wouldn't buy one. All the questions have been answered at least once on the forum.

Honestly, what some people want would look like a set of encyclopedia. This last sentence is not a joke.
If I owned a recorder I would make videos and that would be the fastest way for me to cover the information. I don't own one and am not buying one. On a video I could cover balancing in 2 minutes, writting is a least a page of written text.

What do you need explained?

Rob don't forget there are plenty people who don't use the forum. I learned all I needed to know about the DFX from Jeff Fosters book. Sometimes sitting with a book in front of you is a lot different than sitting with your computer. A book can be referred back to quickly and easily. Don't get me wrong the forum and your fast knowledge has taught me plenty and it is much appreciated. Unfortunately I refuse to sleep with my tablet but I don't mind falling asleep with a book.

I agree there should be a book. I am sure there are 10's of thousands that do not use the internet. Many rarely use it, many do not want to search and look. My father for example reads books all the time and I am positive that he would rather read a book about his detector than spend time browsing around on the internet looking for answers. His book can go with him, his computer cannot.
When I had the dfx I brought the digging deeper book with me to go back on to fix our increase the depth of the dfx. Now I would have to pack up, drive back home, take my hat, gloves, coat off, boots off, and get back on the internet. Then drive back out there.

Don't discount the on board manual, it could be the best written manual yet.

Well, Google Jeff, but after this long I don't think he is doing a book. I haven't seen a post by Jeff in well over a year. It was a post on the analysis screen.

What is it you would like to know that is not in the on board manual or VX3 manual? Both don't need the internet. Yes if all you are saying is a GOOD book would be nice, OK. I'm just asking what would you hope to learn, or need to know? What specifically? For guys with the internet, I'd like to cover them.

I am not bashing White

I'm fine with your opinions and concerns, but I still didn't get an answer to my question.

"I'm just asking what would you hope to learn, or need to know? What specifically? What would you hope to gain from reading the book? For guys with the internet, I'd like to cover what you hope to get in the book." Just let me know what it is.

I also still have heard nothing from Mr. Foster on the subject of a future book. If he is working on a book let us know, please. If he isn't then we need to help each other.

Rob ... you truly are one of the good guys. Your V3i links are outstanding and I know you are looking for more topics to add. If and when I get my head straight I will try to help with specific topics.

Hate to sound like a one note samba but I want a comprehensive printed V3i book that I can hold in my hand. I want it well organized with a Table Of Contents so I can look up topics, control features and what they do, how settings interact with other settings plus how to make specific setting adjustments.

You asked what do I hope to gain from reading a book. Well ... I retain a lot more reading the same information in a book than I do fighting with a computer screen. Can't explain it but it is true. Plus, I can easily take a book into the field with me ... can't easily do that with a computer ... not even a laptop.

Am hoping Jeff Foster answers your request with a YES.

In the mean time, I will be one that tries to contribute.

Bob

I REALLY wish you good luck in your quest for the book. I am not against a book.

The last time we heard from Jeff on the forum was February 19, 2010 08:37AM, when we still had the V3.

I don't know if I am permitted to post this. This was done by earthmansurfer a while ago. It is a compilation of posts from various forums including this one complete with posts from Rob. I like this a lot. I printed it "at work" and makes for some great reading.

I believe you may need a Google account to view it.
If you want to save it hit file and download. It opens in word.

Albert did a good job, but be careful. Many of the posts are old and were made when we were using the Vison and V3. In some cases we now know better and in others they no longer apply. As an example some of the factory programs used 10 kHz filters they now use 5 kHz.

Also some of the posts are wrong. But still it is useful.

My stock programs use 10 kHz filters. New detector bought in oct-nov. 2012

I'M BAD. Keep me on my toes.

I changed all to some. Like you said, "My stock programs use 10 kHz filters." Not all your programs do either. Hi Pro and Mixed Mode Pro used to use 10 kHz with the V3 and now use 5 kHz with the V3I. It was just an example. Now the VX3 has to use 5KHz because it doesn't have a 10kHz filter.

The point is the posts are old. Use them with that in mind.

Is this a coincidence? because a couple of days ago I was looking for my v3is manual and I found it underneath my cars seat after I washed the inside of my car with high water pressure. Well I was thinking how to print a new one and I can take it with me at work cause there I can not have my laptop.

Call Mary at the factory and she will send you a new one...... betcha, betcha.........

The problem with manuals is that, no matter how good your manual is, you still have to put some hours in on the machine before the stuff you read starts to come together. In other words, you have to read it, apply it, and keep reading, applying and, practicing it before it starts to make sense.

People new to the hobby might look at the pictures of some of the finds people post here on the internet and think that it's easy to find good stuff with a metal detector.

But, they don't see the many hours of practice people had to put in on their machines before they got good enough to find the stuff that they're posting.
