Still Looking - Bucket List -

UtahRich

Well-known member
Like many of you, I've had a bucket list for metal detecting since I started this waaaay back when. My list leans towards coinshooting as that has been my main interest. Depending on where we live, some items are easier to come across. For example, older areas of the country are more likely to have older coins. I live out west in Utah, which had Spanish mining from way back when, but wasn't settled until 1847. Older coins are typically at a premium.

I've been fortunate enough to find some keepers over the years, but there are still some coins or types that remain to be found on my part. I don't have my formal list in front of me, but from my best recollection, here's what I am still looking for.

Spanish Silver - Any Reale
3 cent piece
Half Dime
Seated Liberty Quarter
Barber Half
Flying Eagle Cent
Capped Bust Silver of any type
Coin dated from the 1700's

Interested to see what the rest of you have on your lists.

Rich (Utah)

For me it's a

gold coin
Seated Half Dollar
Bust coin, any kind
3 Center, silver and nickel
and there is a few more that I can't think of right now

Some of those on the list are real oldies for sure. Were the Spanish in Utah in the 1700s?

There is no way, nada, never gonna happen i'll find a 1700 or even an early 1800s coin in my immediate area....
unless some coin collector somehow dropped his collection! :heh:
The 1st town in my County was platted in 1853 and even then only had a few structures. However there was an outlaw band operating in the early 1830s around here. They may have even traveled on my property which is only a few miles from their known hideout. Horse thieves and counterfeiters specializing in spurious silver coins.

Anyhow good luck Rich with your list.

Thanks ironsight, I appreciate the well wishes.

The Old Spanish Trail came up through Utah and into the surround states. I believe that specific trade route dates only to the early 1800's. However, many mines in the area . are attributed to early Spanish miners well before that.

Anyway, I don't anticipate finding a Spanish Reale out this way, I think I'll have to make a road trip or two again back east for those older coins. I was with a friend a number of years ago when he found a beautiful Capped Bust Half Dime at an old ghost town. I believe the date was 1836, but it has been a few years. That coin pre-dates the early pioneers rolling into Utah. So you never know. Just have to put yourself in the right place to find what you're looking for and then get out and hunt.

Still interested to see what the rest of you are still looking for.

My coins don't date as far back but for some reason have eluted me.
A shield nickel
A seated coin of any kind
A large cent.

I have found artifacts that date back to the age of these coins just haven't been able to snag the coins yet. I am guessing that is why I pack up every chance I get in pursuit of completing my bucket list.

Happy Hunting diggervance

Good Post. For me it's a

gold coin
Seated Half Dollar
Bust coin, any kind
3 Center, silver and nickel

I was able to cross off the silver dollar this year.

Let's see.....

Gold coin!
20 cent's
Barber half ( Have the Capped Bust, Seated, Walker & Franklin!)
Capped Bust quarter ( 7 Capped Bust & NO quarter!!)
1/2 cent

Iowa Dale

Having met you once Rich, and knowing a little bit about your site selection and hunting skill, I'd bet that bucket list keeps getting smaller! (hmm...gold coin not on the list?) Seriously, meant as a compliment.

Agree that out west, we're somewhat disadvantaged by coinage not coming here in great quantity until the mid 1800's. But, during those times our mints were struggling to meet demand and the Spanish pieces were widely accepted around the mining, railroad, and agricultural towns. I do know of examples found here albeit not often enough.

My bucket list is still pretty big:

Morgan (have found the Peace Dollar )
Barber half
Half dime
Large cent
Any gold coin
3 cent piece
2 cent piece
Flying eagle
Any capped silver
Any pre 1800 coin
Territorial trade token

Ive been blessed to find 5 of the 8 on your list...the best day i ever had old coin hunting was a 3 center,an 1877 indian head,an 1833 bust dime and a 1793 flowing hair large cent that brought tears of joy to my eyes... i had to sit down look up in sky and thank the man upstairs... funny thing is it was at a spot i had hunted many times prior..just gotta be in right place when the stars line up i guess... helps to live in one of the 13 colonies for old stuff.. living out west should help make finding a gold coin a whole lot more likely than finding one on the east coast... my bucket list would be a half dime, gold coin, a bust dollar or half would be awesome too.. oh wait a minute, top of the list would be a george washington button , that would blow my mind for sure...

Well my list is pretty long, unfortunately:

realistic to vaguely possible; any seated silver, capped silver, spanish reale, half dime, Barber half, silver dollar any type, two center, shield nickle.
half cent, colonial copper, 3 cent (silver, nickle)
In my dreams, gold coin any denomination!

bhp,

That is a pretty spectacular day that would put a large dent in the remainder of my list. A number of years ago I did a road trip with a friend back to Pennsylvania and knocked out a number of key items I had on my list. Had a great time seeing all of the OLD homesteads as well. I am hoping to do something like that again.

Good luck on your list.

I need to become a door knocker as the several farm fields ive had great success in ive hunted to the bone..not much left but the iron.. and for some reason the farmers fields are all corn this year which is difficult to hunt due to all the stalks..nobody is planting soybeans which offers much better hunting conditions after being harvested. ..
