WOW...
Most of us on the West Coast don't have the opportunity to dig mane of these.
A partner of mine came up to do a little detecting over the weekend, so we hit a local park.
Got the usual stuff... bunch of clad, no bling and nothing old.
well he said let go...
So off we went to look for better "pastures"..
We found this old home site that I new about... Got permission!.. and started to hunt.
The house was torn down back in the 70's and there was trash everywhere.
We switched from the 6X10's to the 4X6 shooters and went to town.
The Trash was almost to much for the little coil.
We hunted for about an hour and found a little clad ( half dozen coins).
The signals were tough... I got a jumpy VDI that stayed in +'s from the 40's to high 70's.
So I thought I'd better investigate.
I stuck my digger in the rock hard DRY soil an flipped it over and I see a small coin flip out.
I pick it up and hope for silver.
Looking at it without my glasses I see a thick bar in the middle, and think all right a Merc.
I take it over to my partner without looking at it any further and tell him I think I found something Good.
I put on my glasses and we lightly brush it off and it says "One Dime". I think WOO HOO a Barber.
I turn it over and brush it off... and it has 1857 on it... A Seated Dime!! WOW
Talk about the happy dance...
It has great detail and is my first seated anything while detecting.
I'm sure I'll fall off this cloud and get back to the real world, but until then.....
What a ride...

Congrats on a great find!! Nice to know that there are a few of those still out on the west coast to be found! :clapping:

She's a beauty for sure. BIG congrats to you and your new spot to detect. I bet you'll be going back there again and again.

Just a tip: When I go hunting for old coins, I carry a small 35mm canister (that film came in) with a bit of water in it and put my old "keeper" coins in and it soak the dirt off without scratching it.

HH,
Nancy

Cliff, This wonderful coin is the way it came out of the ground with just a light rinse with water.
I'm still amazed with the condition of it. To think that it could have been sitting there for up to 150 yrs. and still look like that.
Wish we could all hold our age that well....
