Steve Herschbach -- re: TDI vs Vision

Hi Steve:

I read your report on the TDI in the Pulse Forum. It was quite impressive. No foil, bottle caps, cans etc.... I like it.

I mostly hunt coins/jewelry, but also go nugget shooting when I can so either machine would work for me. I haven't used either and since you have I was wondering if you could provide us with your opinion as to why I (and others) might choose one over the other. Both sound like killer machines and I was set on the TDI until this Vision came out. Now I'm all messed up again. Perhaps others are also. Can you help?

One last thing. Thank you for your contributions to the forums. I look forward to reading your thoughtful comments.

Hi,

The TDI is a weird duck if used for coin detecting and I'd not recommend it for that as it's primary use. If you have a TDI and want to use it for that, it can be done. I still have my TDI and really like it, but at the end of the day it is a Pulse Induction detector. It is safest to view it as a dig-it-all detector that packs a lot of punch in mineralized ground. But a knowledgeable and creative detectorist can do some neat stuff with it that you can't do with other PI detectors.

The discrimination on the Vision is light-years beyond the TDI. If you really are interested in hunting jewely in places like sports fields it is far better suited for the task than the TDI. What little discrimination can be coaxed out of the TDI is very black and white. Whereas the Vision has what I believe is the most finely nuanced discrimination system I've ever seen.

For me they are both gotta have machines. Generally with the TDI I will be digging everything, with the Vision I'll be after a specific target range.
