Sterling Silver Object - What is it?

Howdy--

As many detectorists do, I save all of my dug targets and when I have the time, I sort the recyclable scrap from the trash. While inspecting the contents of one bucket I noticed the grape design on this item and upon cleaning it discovered that it is marked Sterling. Any ideas what it is? Best of luck and...

odd little piece, based on the size of the dime, its about 3 dimes long.
from the pic it looks to be just one side of the object, is that correct.
are you able to tell from the curve of what is left of the bottom how thick it may have been.
also from pic it looks as if that is the inside of whatever it was, do you have a pic of the outside. or back .
not sure if i could ID it for you, but interesting to see ...

Thanks for your suggestion. It may indeed be the base of an old lighter. Not a Zippo though. They are very proud of their company and it would be marked. Over the years I've dug quite a few Zippo's and I ALWAYS have a lot of fun convincing them to honor their Lifetime Guarantee! Best of luck and...

Thanks for your input. The item is 2 inches tall and 1 and five eighths inches wide. It weighs 10.8 grams. It has a seam around the perimeter. It is open at the top where it is marked Sterling on both sides. My first thought when I saw it was that it was a large fancy screwcap that had been flattened. Ground_Hog_MD, here is the other side. Thanks again. Best of luck and...

pulled this one up in the woods last week.
Old brass Zippo lighter - " Sea power is security " - " U.S. Navy training center " - " Bainbridge M.D.
Bainbridge training center was in service 1942 - 1972 http://usntcb.org/

no plans to send it in to zippo, i think it looks better the way it is,

You have a lighter of sorts......... It held wooden matches.

Google vintage match safe for more info.

I agree its half of a vintage match holder , you can see the rough ridges in the bottom of the first picture . these were used to stike the match.

That is one cool lighter and it has a story. I don't blame you for leaving it in its original as dug condition. I don't hesitate to send back the plain Jane Zippo's and let them honor their "fix or replace" lifetime warranty. Here is a Corrosion Proof Fitting Co. Zippo that they did a good job on. They refurbished the case, replaced the guts and returned the original guts. Best of luck and...

Larry, thanks. I'll do that. I must have dug it at dusk for it to have initially gone in with my trash. It's a good thing that I check each piece individually when I sort my trash/scrap. Best of luck and...

If I can open it up a bit, without ruining it, I may use it as a postage stamp holder. Thanks for the suggestion! Best of luck and...
