Sterling Silver Medal

G'day to all,

I went out detecting yesterday with a mate.
I only had ime for a short hunt but thought it would be good to catch up with him and detect again together.
We tried a spot he researched in the hope of modern coins but it was sparse and we mover slightly into a small park.

For those who care about such things, I was using the 5x10" DD HF in program 2, tracking on with sens about 23.
I got a nice high tone hit which didnt vary and was super solid,
I thought it was another big silver coin like the Florins that I found last week.
From 4" or so down up came a medal.
I couldnt read it and John came over when he saw the big smile on my face.
He read the year and words out for me ...a college that ran 1893-1949.
I told him that I thought it was silver due to the 42 TID reading.
At home later I cleaned it up and it says STL. SIL on the edge of the medal, it weighs 18.4 grams.

In the pic that I post I have blanked out the name of the recipient, he is 84 and still alive I believe.
The family is famous and prominent in my city.
It will be handed back to him as soon as I can contact him through his son...today is a public holiday here.

Anyway I thought you may like to see it before it goes back to him.
Happy swinging everyone.

What holiday? Neat find and cool of you to return it.

Jeff

I am an aussie mate...
The holiday is proclaimed for ANZAC Day.
to commemorate a WWI battle in Turkey where we lost 8800 men.
Anzac represents Australian & New Zealand Army Corps.
All the veterans of various wars and campaigns gather, have ceromonies and march down main streets tohonour the men who made the ultimate sacrificefor the free country we enjoy today.

....and we honor our fallen.... Thank you Lord

Nice Find, Terra1959. It's always nice to find the silver, no matter what form it comes in!
Happy ANZAC Day! We here in the U.S. reserve two days a year: once in May to honor our fallen war veterans, it's called Memorial Day, for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. In November we honor our current service members and former veterans of all the armed services with their own special day and it's called Veteran's Day. It's nice to know you can find something more priceless than silver and gold here on our forum.....that is that we respect our heroes and the sacrifices they gave so we could enjoy our freedoms. So thanks for the little tidbit on ANZAC Day...By the way what do you think of those gray ghost headphones? I'll be needing a pair soon, and so I've been wondering what kind I should get for my Xterra 70?
Is anyone else up for a good suggestion as well?
Happy hunting to everyone, no matter where you hail from!

Hi dignit,

thanks for the kind comments.
I like the Gray Ghost a lot...they fold up into a small ball and fit my melon really well.
Before them I had only used cheapies and boy what a difference they make, especially in hearing threshold changes and those quiet sneaky little signals down deep.
However,I must confess for comforts sake when its very hot, I do wear those sports ear bud earphones with the wrap around the ear part so they dont fall out.
The quality of the sound is far inferior though.

Terra1959,
Thank you for your response. I have heard good and bad about the gray ghost headphones. As with any other brand, the common problems I hear of (and that which I have experienced with my own metal detector-specific head phones) the man made materials the ear pads are made out of tend to crack, split and detiorate after about a year of use. I was looking for a pair of headphones that will last for more than a year or two. I like the right angle plugs, individual right and left controls, and the quality of sound that the current headphones I use provides. I suppose I must read the FAQ's?

dignit,

From what I understand most of the actual soft pads will not last indefinetly and the pads require a $10 replacement every couple of years.
The ear pads just slip on and off and are made to be replaceable.
Someone may correct me on this but...Koss, Whites, Killers etc - I think you will find they all suffer the same complaint of ear pad deterioration.
the ear pads are made to be soft to mould around differing ear shapes and our sweat and body oils probably affect them.
A wipe wilth soapy towel (using a very mild) to remove the human traces would probably prolong their life expectancy.
I was told to match the Ohms with one suitable/recommended for your detector.
I find comfort and sound quality the most important factor as I have them on for hours at a time.
Good luck on hearing those signals mate.
