Sterling, but what did it come off of?

Went hunting Wednesday and found this item along with a few other goodies. it screamed 12-46 in both directions about 8 inches deep, and it had me thinking a Quarter or Ring all the way. what I didn't expect to dig up was some strange 3/4 in round ball with a rusted screw in it. got home and cleaned it up and saw Sterling stamped on it, it also had what appeared to have cork or wood inside of it as well as the rusted screw................ any thoughts to what it might have came off of, Thanks, LFG

I cleaned out the inside, 3 grams of the good stuff

That sure is an interesting piece! And big on top of that.

Could it have had a cork mounted to the steel center section and been a nice bottle stopper?

I would say a cane top I have seen them like that before.
