Steel shank boots

Buried Crap NJ

New member
Do steel shank boots or waders cause problems when detecting? Or for that matter do steel toe boots waders cause problems when detecting? I was out looking for new hip or 18 inch high boots. I found some and then saw steel shank boots written on them. I use an Excalibur and was just thinking this would be a problem? steve

I haven't tried hunting with my sovereign with steel toe boots, but I know some of my other detectors will pick up the
steel toe if you get to close while swinging.
I can't say if the steel shank will effect the detector or not.
I wouldn't recommend having any steel toe boots on while detecting.

Steve - My steel shanked waders cause my Sov and Excal to null when I swing the coil too close to the tip of the boots. I'm aware of it and it doesn't really bother me anymore, and sometimes I'll swing the coil over my foot just to hear the null if I'm not getting any signals. Matt

Watch my video's, almost all of my hunts are with the steel shank boot fit waders, and I hunt AM/PP 90% of the time {which is more sensitive}. Do they get picked up...Yes, but you just have to be aware, and you do get use to them. If you watch the video you will see they get picked up a few times, and I am still able to pick OUT faint deep targets as I head back to the water.......

I have watched all you videos, I never notice that that it nulls by you feet but I will re watch some . thanks steve

There has been posts on this forum where people will actually put metal or a coin in their footwear to reset the threshold after a null.

Steve, watch for the slight rise in threshod as he gets close to the boot, as in all metal it won't null like in disc mode

Thanks everybody for the responses. My waders have a steel shank in them I don't remember it affect me on the beach. I use to glue a nickle to my boot, that won't work with the excal I found that out already. I got some good ideas from all of ya . steve

I made the mistake of wearing steel toe hiking boots to detect yesterday and will never do it again. My DFX went nuts while swinging at max sensitivity. I was wondering why it was so erratic until I realized it was my boots. I had to hold the coil way way out there which was very uncomfortable. I went back home and switched shoes and went back out with no problems. I would strongly advise against steel toes, but steel shanks are far enough away from the coil to be ok.
