stealth detecting?????

i am beginning to wonder if all of us should stop hunting from about 12 noon until 7pm. i generally do not hunt during the peak beach-goers time period since i do not like to weave in and out of people and answer a million questions.
there is a general consensus that less is being found and there are more and more detectorists visable on the beach. i am beginning to believe the theorie that people see the detectorists and are more aware of and cautious to take care of there precious metals.
what do you all think?????

I have seen you were challenged on this point on other boards, but I STRONGLY agree. Detecting amongst the crowds is BAD for business. The losers WILL take precautions, I've seen them take it off before going in when they see me. We are mostly in the way, kids are a bunch of pests(and have you ever noticed they HAVE to be RIGHT under your feet), not to mention interviews from the adults. Do as you will, as for me, I'll stick to evenings and graveyards.

Ain't that the truth about kids, sometimes you just want to bump them in the big hole you just dug and cover them up. and keep on walkin' Gene

I'm with GH, i like to keep a low profile, during beach weather i start as the sun worshippers are leaving, apart from the fact i can't stand the heat during the day.

Found anything? What does one of those cost? Can I listen? Wish my husband would get one of those. What do you usually find? Ha Ha it's just a bottle cap. Early morning late evening or after dark seems best for me. HH :minelab:

You guy's are pretty serious about your hobby I don't mind talking to the natives after all they are the ones leave the spoils for us to find. Mind you I'm a early morning /late evening guy, just to hot the rest of the time maybe i should take the excal for a swim try my luck in the water with a big fin stuck to my back that should solve the crowd problem just a thought

I try to hunt the tides, but I'm beginning to think we're shooting ourselves in the foot hunting crowded beaches. For all of the reasons stated here, bit there's one I'm more concerned about. I've had a few very close calls where I was pinpointing a target and suddenly smacked by a 6 year old surfing a wave on a boogie board. No big deal for me, but I'd hate to slice kid's scalp on my scoop or on the corner of my control box. Besides feeling personally responsible for that, I can't think of anything that would open the door for banning us from certain beaches.

"Your mother is looking for you!" "MOVE IT!" are a few that clear the air. Most responsible parents will hear you and tell their kids to leave you alone. I had one lady say "he wants to watch you" about her kid. Shook my head and did an about face. Its the only way to be. I am not there to answer questions, make friends or entertain...I AM THERE TO MIND MY OWN BUSINESS. Which is my the last phrase I will leave you with for an answer..."I am just minding my own business" Answer 3 different questions in a row with it and they are bound to walk away. Cheers and HH. -Joe

PS not trying to sound like a crab. It just really really gets annoying...of 1000 beachgoers you as a detectorist end up the only one like the pied piper if your not careful.

For me the beach belongs to the beach goers in the day and I get it at the late shift,,I don't mind talking to people and when kids get around me that are a bother I just move on or head to deeper water where them Sting Rays might bite you, Ya have to go to the hospital too to get them stingers out,,,,works for me, no kid problem,,,,,,also if I get a find and alot of people are around I move back into the water to retrieve the find in case its something good, then I can show them that bottle cap I found.

reading these posts is a trip for me...lol....I can relate on every front! I try to hunt daybreak til whenever i feel presure. And when people start showing up....the tape plays over and over in my mind..." i wonder who or when sombody will complain...for whatever reason".......I even try not to look around to see who may be watching me......I dont want to make eye contact. On the other hand....Ive met several detectorist that just hapened to be at the beach..and have had some good conversations...All in all...I always try to keep a low profile...cause sooner or later ....sombody who doesnt like to see anybody doing anything ...shall I say fun?!......complain..or try to adopt a county ordinance...good luck to all....wayupnorth

Guys, here is the other side of the story, I have two beaches I hunt regularly and find the majority of my rings, coins and what have you. The one beach I would not want to arrive before the security guards are on shift at 08:00 and would not want to be the last off the beach carrying my detector and "all the perceived finds". The other beach I have to take a water taxi to at $10 a pop, so I take my water, power bars, water, fruit and more water and plan on hunting from 08:00 through to 15:00 and yes put up with the tourists.
I am only wintering for 2 - 3 months of the year so have to make the most of it. By the way I have learned so much from this forum and got the tip from Gene about not being the first on the beach or last off the beach, THANKS GENE.

Due to what I see now with people going between blankets all day at the beach with detectors, also bragging and showing theirs finds to anyone asking , the internet, showing finds and how and where its found - people have wised up. Good for them but bad for those wanting to find the goodies. There are thousands of new people detecting. How did they get interested, reading, asking, seeing what others are finding. The new people detecting is only a small percentage of people in the know, due to the above.
So finds are dwindling.

Im a late afternoon early morning kind of hunter myself. Although if there is a good tide or I am finding things steadily, I keep on going into mid day or late night. One thing I will say is I visit my less crowded beaches on the weekends and visit the more traffic-ed ones on the weekdays. I know that seems contrary to logic but it seems to work in my area and I get less hassles.

I will hunt in the early morning hours or later in the evening ONLY when the tide is low, I check the tides all the time.Sometimes I won't hunt for a month just waiting for the right tide in the am or pm, I just don't like a crowd crowding around me and they will especially the kids, they can be very annoying. HH

i only hunt the beaches in the winter. tides go farther out when the north wind is blowing. I never see anyone on the beach when the temp is freezing and the wind is blowing so cold that your eyes water. but down here in texas the winter isnt that big of a deal.
here is how i test to see if the conditions are rite. i feel the water lol if it makes the family jewels run and hide then there wont be people on the beach.
there is plenty to be found on the beach so dont worry, those summer guys didnt even make a dent in it. the good stuff was under some dumb teen girl that the summer hunter walked around and left for the winter beach hunter.

I dont hunt beaches mutch but i alway stay clear of the crowd, if i hunted a beach it would be early morning or late or in bad weather but one up side is if somone lost somthing you may get a reward
