State of the forums. Call me nuts if you disagree, but I remember

Dancer

Well-known member
Early on, years ago. They were something like "Dodge City". As I remember, all the different brands posted on one forum. This was way back when I had dial up internet. Well as being a newbie the guys on the forums were my only hunting buddies. Got a lot of tips that helped me out. The Moderator,s were probably new also because I remember, sometimes things got very heated about detector brands. There were some real rivalries, name calling, and more. I drifted away a few years due to heavy work schedule. When I got back, law had come to town. Most manufacturers had their own site. Things were civil, sometimes funny, and always helpfull. The posts kept coming, and one had to keep up. Then slowly the forums started sub dividing. And now many are hardly getting any play at all. Some forums lucky to get a post a day. Some sites you got to scroll down a third of the page to get by obsolete posts held over for who knows why. Then rest of page being kept alive by maybe 2-4 loyal members. I believe that trying to have a nitch for every machine has resulted in over saturation. Something like the Hockey playoffs, everyone makes it. I'm just throwing this out there, what do you guys think ?

Dancer - I agree, the findmall forums are going slack. Just since I have been a member here I have seen a great decline in the number of post to forums. I feel that the forums should be collapsed, or, reduce to just the single manufacturer brands. White's forum, Garrett forum, Minelab forum, ect.

I think people can do site searches now and find all the info they need, no need to post a question any more. Thus, those people who have the knowledge and generosity to post answers, well, there are no questions to answer any more. The answers are all found thru site searches.

Also, have the classified forums been eliminated? I may have overlooked something, like a change of location, they aren't where they used to be.

Au79 I still see the classifieds near the end of the forum scroll.

Another problem is the fact that metal detectors are all the same now,all share the same technology and there is very little in the way of innovation.Years ago there was room for new ideas which created interest and discussion and new features that kept everybody talking.
Nowdays, detectors are much alike because the same technology is used by all manufacturers, lets be honest there are no real stand out machines on the market like there used to be.Also,if you look at all the topics on all the different forums, the same topics arise over and over again so a lot of the older members, who have been involved in these topics before, don't bother to get involved any more.
Also,as the hobby grows, there is far more competition and I believe that many detectorists are starting to keep information to themselves........i am guilty of this too.My situation involves my local beach as beach detecting is my main form of detecting. There are a few detectorists who detect this beach all day while I work full time.I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve at this beach which gives me half a chance of finding something that they have missed.........the last thing i'm going to do is share these tricks on a forum,if I did there would be nothing left for me.This may sound a bit pathetic but as more people take up the hobby there will be less info shared i'm afraid.
The forums over here(in britain) are exactly the same, they used to be buzzing but now there are only a few posts on a daily basis.
I try to scroll through all the forums for all the different brands as there is usually discussion that relates to detecting in general in all the forums......if I can help or add something to a discussion I will, but even I get a bit disheartened these days when I ask a question and no body bothers to answer.

Neil couldn't agree with you more. Over here got these detecting shows on TV. Now got newbies running around parks in the middle of the day digging with spade shovels. Terrible.

I have 2 different forum websites that I go to and the other one has dropped off like you say but the ones I go to on here seem to have plenty of activity every day. There are some on the list that I usually bypass that sometimes go months with no activity.

Yes dancer,a few years backs it seemed as if this and some other forums did have more activity... things do slow down towards winter with less people getting out..then again a decade or two back things were more condenced as there were fewer manufacturers... years ago each manufacturer had one forum..now there are forums dedicated to specific modules let alone manufacturer . . also some folks have had problems after posting finds and are reluctant to do so anymore.. while it would seem this hobby is growing in popularity it would also seem that the amount of places to hunt are dwindling equally as fast... ive been on other forums and gotta say that this sight by far is my favorite...i for one do like the individual detector forums,i do like the simple non nuclear layout ,it's great... and i find the fellow members here to be more down to earth and genuine.. if it's chaos and drama you want ,and im sure you dont, you wont find it here... the classifieds here and some of our long term sponsors cant be beat... as far as the overall layout of this forum it is the best... just remember, biggest and busiest dont mean best... i belonged to another forum a few years prior to learning about this one..this other forum changed their format totally and screwed up a good thing .... im not trying to kiss butt here but man i really really like this forum ..met some nice folks ... ya this is home for me....

There are a lot of categories on this forum that I ignore since I do not use that type of machine. I hit about half a dozen fairly regularly but rarely if ever look at some of them.

When I started about 3 1/2 years ago I was able to learn a lot about the machine I had purchased by reading posts of one certain individual that has since quit posting due to attacks by others.

I have seen some posters banned for life by the heavy handed law enforcement for minor infractions of the rules. One individual that was a very active poster and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing what he had to say is just one example.

So I sometimes comment on a post I have quit posting about any finds that I have made.

I think I know who you are referring to George and I also learned quite a lot from what he said.
This is also a problem with free speech on some forums today, because they are sponsored by some of the large companies, you can't say too many negative things about their products, even if they are true.
As mentioned above though, this forum is a great place to be if you own a detector.

I for one get tired of posting my finds and hundreds of views but only a couple of people post. One of the forums I am on gets maybe one or two new post a week and that's it.

Hey Dancer! Not sure if you were focused on "sub" forums on this site or were referring to metal detecting forums/sites in general, but I have to agree that activity seems down over the last few years.

Some of it it is due to Facebook and other social media site. I prefer the forum format myself to say Facebook.

can also be attributed to todays busy lives. I for one is guilty of not responding to posts that I thoroughly enjoyed in the past but did not post a comment due to lack of time and I'm sure I can speak for others:shrug: I'm sure a LOT of people enjoy seeing pics and reading the posts while absorbing the information regarding the find but for whatever reason don't respond.

Well one thing guys this thread is getting some play. Never gave Facebook a thought. But going through the trouble for pictures, couple hundred views, 1or3 posts. You know I like to read with what machine, coil , how deep etc. Always looking to learn something.

If its a question about a find then lots of posts are great but sometimes posts tie up the forum with lots of posts just saying great find but not really adding anything to the discussion

It's really hard to add much to a post...... unless you have the same experience... I think a " Nice Find "..." Good Job". Means a lot to people.

It shows we read, and are interested in what the person is doing in the way of detecting.. and the machine/s they use............

Disagree as its not about just new machines or what has been covered in the past, its about today and the people out there wanting to
talk to others,I got out for a short period and couldn't remember my old user name or email and had to start over, but have been these sites since 98 and still love it as much now as then.
There been a lot of them gone away but treasurenet and findsmall keep on going.
I do miss the hay day of metal detecting internet sites.
Remember,The Golden Olde with Norm, good stuff.

If ban from any forum a person can change his IP Address with simple to follow software instructions...Bingo, your back on, different user name and email address.

really just posting finds is for what wanting a pat on the back, really !! :please: I went on the finds sub forum never again no mention of machine settings anything now I thought that giving something back to others was important, that helped me people sharing their settings etc.. but maybe its getting pretty cut throat out there and any little advantage someone spent 2 years stumbling across is kept to themselves??

so yeah post up what you find but if you don't have the time to share at least your settings then who wants to read it :sleepy: about 5 mins of that stuff "boring" :goodnight:

then 20 posts of well done :clapping: like really who cares !!

I would rather read some heated debate and then I can pick some goodies out of that that might help me become a better detectorists and I would hope that maybe I have helped someone a tinny bit.

as for the show and tell well yeah nice for the showie but the rest of us well who cares unless you share your settings etc...

so yeah I think its times are tough and my fishing secrets are just that
