:starwars:I trotted out a couple of my fast moving newbies.........

The past two days in a couple of iron infested colonial sites. The AT Pro dubbed BB and another by F the GBSE. Some info:

The Black Beauty has got the electronic know how. Allot of thought went into its design. It will in my opinion do very well when the headphone issue is cleared up. Sound means the world to me. Poor quality sound due to the stock headphones makes the detector seem weak. I did a recovery speed test side by side with an iron nail and a clad dime and flat button. The advantage went to the GBSE but BB was no slouch. Depth in the ground seems to be similar. I dug some deep targets so far with both detectors. The meter goes to the GB SE. Easy to see. BB can been seen but not as well for me. The rod configuration goes to the GBSE. Cam locks keep it from the dreaded wobble at max. length. BB wobbles. Battery type is a draw. One nine volt or 4 AA's for the BB does not bother me. I put lithium batteries in all my detectors and they last along time.Pinpoint goes to the GBSE. BB is weak on deep targets. Tone id went to BB. But only when you need to check the targets iron resolution. The tone roll is a magic button. It will id large iron spot on. But only use it to verify a target in heavy iron or you will be bombarded with more sound. The GBSE may read large iron as good high conductive metal. Both work well on salt water beaches but neither is a MLB . BB will excel under the lakes and rivers in the coming season. My opinion. I will continue to enjoy both and mod my BB shaft to straight and get the G. adapter so I can use my own phones. One last thing, Weight and balance goes to the GBSE at max rod length. BB feels heavy to me on the coil end but I do love both coils and yes both get tangled in fallen twigs and sound off when you hit a rock or log. I'm sure this will get deleted but this is my opinion for whatever its worth.

BB wobbles

With all the good I am reading about the AT, I really cannot understand something like this. Why put out a hot relic machine with a shaft that wobbles? That would really bother me.

Why add really good audio, make an adapter that only takes Garrett headphones, then provide sub-standard headphones to go with the advanced audio?

I wonder if Garrett will offer an At-PRO/PRO model with locks on the shaft and quality headphones... J/K

What would really be cool would be for them to make a hardwired, small adapter box, smaller than a deck of cards, clip-on, with both waterproof and standard HP connectors. Make it with a quality metal screw on cap for the standard jack. Then you could clip the box to your belt or shirt, plug in either waterproof or standard headphones and not worry about losing the box since it would be hardwired to the detector.

That would solve all the HP problems... but i'm not an engineer so what do I know?

Maybe you have something but I doubt the headphones are substandard.

Maybe they should skip the headphones and just throw in an adapter that can be velcro tied to the upper cuff shaft? Wear your headphones combat-style with the cord on your back and the jack at the cuff. Then you can use whatever phones you choose. Making the whips will still be labor intensive with the watertight connector and it would likely be assembled as water tight at the machine. As it stands, the headphones are good to go until the water is up to your ears. That will suite most.

The water tight connector for the Infinium is good to a rated depth (seven atmospheres). That takes a bit more care to manufacture than most know. Assembly is very labor intensive and there is the utmost of quality control to insure a proper build. Going from a ten foot rated depth (1.6 Fathoms) to 200 feet (33 fathoms) is a big leap and most will not even get wet. To deliver a universal machine rated at ten feet is quite a challenge itself and what is offered in the AT PRO package is a value underrated. The controls themselves are a design advancement for an underwater environment. Three cheers for Team :garrett:

Divers will order the underwater headphones as an option. Are they LOUD? Wear a neoprene hood and try them out in the deep end of a swimming pool, make sure they are all wet. Then try it with an aqua lung. I am sure there were many discussions on what to offer the customer in the Garrett AT PRO. Even Burger King has problems with customers who want it their way.

The loose shaft is not a design flaw if you get it real muddy in muddy waters. At some point you will want to disassemble it and an interference fit is a PITB to pull apart if it was silted/sanded.

I had a set of these made up for my AT...sweet!! Just getting ready for next spring at the lakes!!

Headphone connector issues would be completely eliminated if the machine was designed for wireless HP's, I wonder how much this simple change in design would add to the end product.

Of course this would not please those who wish to use their own choice of cans unless you had a body mountable receiver with standard connection and there goes your waterproofing, but heck you can't please all of the people all of the time.

There is no headphone problems and the little "wobble" is insignificant...decide for yourself J...As always negitive comments make a harder hit on the brain as positive ones do. Just the way people are.

I finally had a chance to find out what those of you who have complained about the balance were talking about. When I was checking out the AT Pro I noticed that the armrest was only halfway down my forearm making the detector seem very front heavy. On most of my own detectors the armrest is much closer to my elbow and even though my own detectors have much heavier coils they don't' seem as out of balance as the AT Pro. I think it needs a longer shaft so that the armrest can be moved farther up your arm. The one that I looked at had the armrest all the back even with the end of the shaft.
