Starting to become happier with Explorer!

For all of you who do not remember, I am the one who bought the Explorer about three weeks ago, and then started griping about the pinpointing and asking for help. Well, I was real close to begging my dealer to take back my Explorer and give me a DFX. Allow me to say, I am glad I didn't! I have taken the past two weeks off of work (vacation), and have been spending a ton of time with it.(Approximately 8 hours a day for the past two weeks) Basically, the only problems I had were adapting to the Tone I.D. and pinpointing. Well, I think I have the pinpointing down to a science. I was using my Tesoro to pinpoint, but decided that I would never learn the Explorer if I didn't start practicing with it. Suddenly, the pinpointing just came to me. I can recover the target almost every time on the first dig with a hole hog. Tone I.D. is actually very nice once you adapt to it. With all of this out of the way, I have to say the Explorer is one nice detector! I know this is the old cliche', but I feel I am digging targets deeper than I ever hit with my XLT. The more I use it, the more I like it. Leave it to the Aussies to build such a cool detector!

Thats all that is needed,a little time on it.Once you get some hours on it,it will start to amaze you what it will do.The main thing,IMO,is don't let it get you down.Once you get even the slightest bit frustrated, take a break and think about what it is that got you frustrated. It's like it knows when you get down and quits working.Your finds drop off instantly.Keep a positive attitude and before long you wouldn't own another detector.Well maybe a backup Explorer.

to use than the White's line. I haven't used a DFX but my Eagle Spectrum was IMHO much more difficult to get used to than the Explorer. Everyone says there's such a steep learning curve but I haven't found this to be the case so far.
With my Spectrum there are so many menu options you need to tweak for every site and then once you get it down you still need to be periodically messing with Preamp and AC sens. It wouldn't be so bad if they had hot keys for these two, but they don't. Then there's the discrimination. I think my White's is much more tiresome to program than the Explorer. It's not intellectually challenging, just tedious.
I, for one, think this is a fairly easy detector to use but then I had the benefit of people like Ric and Bill helping me out. There's really no substitute for hands on teaching.
Glad to hear you've become more confident in your machine. I'm still an amateur but I think if the good targets are there I can find them much easier with my Explorer.

to turn your probe off. But seriously you are a quick learner. And I feel you went into it with a great attitude and a thirst for knowledge on it.
Alot of the tech talk,I think, overwhelms some. They start out half scared and make it harder on theirselves than it actually is.It's easy to do.
Like with Ken West,IMO,I bet he read up on the Explorer and read all the good things about it,but the bad things said about the pinpoint really buried deep in his mind and he started off with two strikes against him.I wish he lived where we could get together with him and help him out some.It really does help out even being in the same area with someone who has one.I have been real lucky that most days starting out were better than others, but I do know how frustrating it can get and it is no fun. There were a few days when I wanted to give up,not on the Explorer, but detecting altogether.I hope Ken doesn't.
I don't know if he knows it,but, the first time I hunted with BiLL I watched him like a hawk.He taught me alot and don't even know it.Everything from sweep speed to how he pinpoints to what size plug he digs,etc.etc.
If anyone is having problems, post where you live and find someone with an explorer to hunt with.Even if you have to travel a ways,it will be well worth your time to do so!The Explorer can be so much fun when you get confidence in it's abilities and confidence in your abilities operating it.100 degree heat and no rain for months is a different story!

WISH I COULD FIND SOMEONE UP HERE IN THE NORTHWEST TO "LEARN FROM".
I AGREE WITH RIC. PERSIVERANCE WILL PAY OFF! I'VE BEEN AT IT FOR SIX MONTHS AND I'M STILL LEARNING NEW THINGS EVERY WEEK. IT SEEMS JUST ABOUT THE TIME I SAY "THIS AIN'T WORTH IT, I'M OUTTA HERE" THAT LITLE GUY IN THERE POPS UP ANOTHER QUARTER OR A NICE RING!

There are quite a few on the forums in the northwest.Post a "Is there anyone near sucha sucha place" On the main Forum and I bet someone is close to you.If not take a trip to central Illinois and hunt with me,Doug and BiLL!

I would love to try the trip but not in the summer. I've been in the midwest this time of year and I'll pass on the 100 plus high humidity stuff!
I'm from Tacoma, Wa.

This is for Doug and Ric both. That is what this Hobby is about,Good Friends, Hunting together and learning from each other. I learned From Ric the History of a great small area of the state. Also a little about What we used to call Run what ya brung. Flexability to do your own repair and use your head. From Doug a very interesting aspect of the hunting by using a GPS very intriguing. Works great also. Plus the mental attitude of hunting with and learning a new piece of equipment. So don't think I wasn't watching you guys also.

I live in Northern Illinois but maybe it's time for me to take a trip to Central Illinois for an advanced lesson.
I have about 90 hours (1 month) in w/ my explorer and I think I've gotten very good at basic shallow target ID & pinpoint. What I'm really wanting to get better at is two things.
1) ID'ing gold. My neighbor w/ a XLT prides himself on finding jewelry...rings mainly. I've gotten a few rings but only silver ones.
2) Higher on my hit list - I want to get better at finding deep silver and Indian Heads. I've been hunting some old parks in my area (Elgin if you know the turf) and have found a few targets at 4-6" but never heard anything to make me want to go searching deeper. (That is, the sound bounced all over the place and/or disappeared).
My standard travelling bag is the stock 10", a stealth 8, and a 15" WOT...oh and an X-1 too. I don't think technology or equipment is holding me back..just the operator.
When/where do you guys normally hunt and would you mind a "yankee" tagging along?
~Tim (IL)

Tim,
Howdy,we all get together on weekends, occasionally,I don't think BiLL,Doug and Mike could handle me all the time
I am free right now about anytime. We sure need rain, digging is rough, but do-able.With rain I just about would guarantee some deep coins. At least deep enough for you to see what they are like.Silver, who knows, but it is still here,at least for the Explorer.
Send me an email, maybe we can set something up.
