Starting out with the At Pro

Ive read a lot of advice and what to do. In order to learn the best way, what is any ones advice on starting out for the first time. Such as what mode and settings to use. I like this forum and all the advice, but I get confused and want to start out at the top and I feel that is not the right thing to do. So I'm asking. As Ive stated before, I am new to metal detecting and new to this forum. Forgive me if I become nuisance, if I do, just let me know. Thanks

Read the AT owner manual, watch the instructional videos, practice, practice. Most of all, enjoy the hobby. This is not a game or a contest. It can be, but that is really not the way to start out. You will find that each outing, each new site will be exciting and present a different set of learning experiences and challenges. I get just as excited digging a token or a hot wheels toy as I do digging a ring. Getting out in the open, meeting new people, learning something new, comaradre with other detectorists that share your excitement and just watching the sun come up are the real joys of this hobby. Sharing all of these things with others on this and related forms is fun, a real learning and sharing expeience.

I dug a 1935 walking liberty half dollar the other day. The excitement in that was not that it's worth money, the excitement was finding something in the abandon parking lot of a movie theater in my hometown, a movie theater that I use to go to when I was a kid. It brought back memories of being young, trouble free in a time much more simple than today.
I was excited, actually elated. It brought out the thrills of my youth. I got to share all of that with my family, my friends and all of you folks on this forum. At the end of the day, it made my day. To me, that's what this is all about.

Happy Hunting and Good Luck--------------------------------Thanks for reading--------------------------Love my AT Pro

Thats what this place is for! Imagine the old days when you had to learn everything on your own? This Forum will save you probably a half a year of fooling around trying to get in sync with your machine..especially if you've never detected before. You will be no more of a nusiance than any of the rest of us have been! Welcome!

All of the above advice is why I love this forum. Especially sparkser's post. Best advice you could get. I'm new to the AT as well. I set mine in pro mode, zero, iron disc set between 25 and 35. Sometimes I set it at 0 just to hear everything. Just get our there when you can and dig a lot of targets to get an idea of what different targets sound like. Starting out at a real trashy site might be difficult. Try to hit a school yard or somewhere that isn't so trashy. It will click and then your off. Good luck, hope you make some great finds. Keep us posted on how it goes. Don't worry about asking a lot of questions, that's what this forum is for. Information sharing is what it's all about. Have fun with it and don't get discouraged. The finds will come. Joe.

The honest truth is that the AT has so much support on this forum from all of the expert users that it is one of the easiest detectors to learn. You should be well on your way after 3 or 4 trips out. Read, ask, view the instruction videos. You will be making finds soon.

Enjoy

These forums and some experience will lead to some great finds. Good luck and happy hunting. I'm new with the AT/Pro but have been using another detector for several years. I'm learning all the time and just wish I could go metal detecting more than I do. I have found out that water hunting is easier on my back and wore out knees than land hunting and that's what I intend to focus on in the future.

I am learning from the forums and like yourself and other members. I continue to read on the subject and recently have ordered some some books suggested by edmonton.
