Starting a debate/fact finding mission concerning noise cancelling and what method gets best results for you

I have read different schools of thought on the proper usage of the noise cancel feature and how it can dramatically effect your depth or perhaps not. Thought it would be good to start a thread just for this one question and try to keep it on topic. Not wanting to start a war but rather get to the bottom of this issue by seeking the methods and results from successfully E-Trac users finding older deep coins, jewelery and relics.
I do tend to trust Minelab instructions but we all know that often times the end user can improve a machines performance by "tweaking" it in ways not mentioned in the owners manual.:)

So do you do it with coil at waist level a foot above clean soil or flat on clean soil and why ???

ive always just tried to do what the manual says to do. it would be interesting to try the three different heights, one after another, and see if the detector selects different channels each time....or not.

Hi Guys, I always noise cancel a foot above ground just because that is what it says to do. I do not know if this is the best method or not as I have not tried any other. Very curious if there is a better method or not. or is it all that necessary at all. Thanks Ray-Mo for starting this.

I noise cancel about a foot above the ground with the coil as parallel to the ground as possible holding the detector as still as possible. I only re-noise cancel when the detector becomes unstable which quiets it right down.

I noise cancel before starting every time. My method is like a ground balance - one foot off the ground with a slow pumping motion 4 " down and back up repeatedly until done. I don't know its just the way I've always done it. I find lots of stuff so who knows ?

This thread and the other one on Noise Cancel has really started me wondering about how the E-Trac actually works. Now, I have questions that I didn't consider before:

1. Noise cancel is looking for "Noise" I assume. Can this noise also include 'ground noise' as well as standard emi?
2. In manual sensitivity mode does the E-Trac still 'auto ground balance'? Or is this only in auto mode and therefore the unit needs some type of ground balance that needs to be done with noise cancel and the coil on the ground?
3. Does it really even matter or can you just select a manual channel that is quiet?
4. It is physically a lot easier to noise cancel with the coil on the ground. Keeping the coil 12" above the soil and completely still for what seems more like 30 seconds to me is a bit of a pain.
5. I know from experience that if you do repeated noise cancels you will rarely get the unit to consistently select the same channel even though you have not moved or changed anything.
6. I Prep57's method works, why haven't we heard about this before, especially if it provides greater depth? Why is this method not even suggested as an alternative or 'pro' feature in Andy's book or the mfg. Manual?

I emailed Andy regarding the original thread of which you speak, pointed him to it, and asked for his input. He kindly responded and informed he would take a look as soon as he could. I'm very interested in these threads and look forward to Andy's thoughts, as well as others, if possible.

I've always run NC as suggested by the manual, and have included the pumping motion that CT Todd has mentioned.

Yes, Andy posted in the other thread.

I RARELY noise cancel, and only do so IF and when I start getting interference, normally when I am hunting right beside another etrac user. When I do noise cancel I hold the coil maybe an inch or two of the ground. I always thought it made more sense to me to do it close to the soil.

i read somewhere that someone tested depth at different channels and found channel 2 to be the "hottest" for depth...so i just leave mine on channel 2.

When I am not getting very many signals, I GB on the ground and always get immediate responses. I do it even if I am not getting interference........NGE

Ray I run mostly 5 on the noise cancel. It is what has produced for me the best. Every now and then 9 if I'm getting some EMI. I don't let the machine select per it will change the machine slightly seems like
