Start for 2007...

Not spectacular finds but anything dug this time of year is a bonus. I had cleaned and cataloged all my stuff for 2006 and then the snow melted and I had to reopen the 2006 records and start ones for 2007.

Bummer, hugh.

Yesterday I went to a sight that was too wet to detect a few days ago. Still real wet. Got a few IH's and some wheaties. This is one of those sites where the wetness really turns the coppers red and they all ID like silver. I headed to some higher ground and got the mercs and a few nicer wheats. Not sure what the big jeweled trinket is but they used to park circus wagons here and this looks like something that could have fallen off.

Today I poked my nose into work to see if I was needed and then headed off. Went through a little town that I had noticed a school and church a couple years ago. Saw a car parked outside and went in and got permission. Got a 1888 IH, 1899-O dime, and a few wheats. Signals were few and far between. There are some really trashy areas and I will perhaps go hit it again tomorrow with the 8", then perhaps go trolling with the WOT. The dime was down about 7-8" and was quite faint, was sure it would be seated.

Also found the large caliber bullet today. Looks civil war era.

The diameter above the skirt ring is about .560. I know that both .577 and .560 were common calibers. Anyone have a clue what kind this is?

Also noticed that one of the IHs I found a couple days back was about as nice as I've seen...

You can see every diamond on the hair band distinctly. Checked my collection and discovered have a few dates almost as nice, but not quite.

Hi Chris,
Looks like a good start for 2007, I guess your not snowed in where you are, I like that IH, nice condition.

All the best.....Boony

Very Nice Barber Dime you found. You did really well for this early in the year and you should feel lucky that you have been blessed with ground conditions that are diggable in your area. Hope you bring home some more nice old coins today and I will be checking in later on to see what else you found. Good Luck and HH.

Nice start for the year Chris! I got a buffalo and a wheaty the one time I went out this year. I am not sure if I will make it out again until spring though. I guess we should be happy getting out in January.

After looking in the Civil War Projectiles Book it appears to closes resemble a "Sharps and Hankin" civil war carbine bullet with the one wide base ring. Great find HH

Thanks much,

I had looked at a few bullet sites but didn't see anything the matched real closely, having the makers name of the carbine will help greatly. I've found quite a few civil war buttons around here in Wisconsin, but seldom find the large caliber lead.

I am working on the Pics now and should have them up shortly. As for the weather change, at least you got out and found a few finds for the new year already and I am sure you are going to do great this year. Good Luck and HH.

Greetings Chris,
Your Bullet appears to be a pistol round, circa Civil War. The silver is a really nice addition to your spoils too!! Happy Hunting Grounds,

Savage (EX-II)

I would have one hell of a kick if it was. It's bigger than 1/2 inch diameter. Don't know of many(any?) handguns of that size.
