Standing Liberty

Found these two today. It is a bit worn but it looks good to me. As shallow as this was, along with the extreme wear, I believe someone had this in their pocket for years carrying it around for a good luck charm and simply lost it. It was only an inch from the surface. The Wheat is either a 1913 or 1918 D. My Son will have to read the date later.

Beauty! Thats my 'dream coin' this year! Funny about the depth...sometimes it just works out that way...I dont know why, could have been dropped 50yrs ago, unless it was in a totlot.....wish coins could talk!
Nice hunting there!

That is one of many coins that are on my wish list. Nice Find. One of the first quarters that I ever found was a Barber. It was only about two inches deep laying on a layer of clay. It had obviously been there a long time as it had turned black. I often wonder how an item got to where I found it and how long it may have been waiting for me to show up and rescue it from the elements.

This coin was found at an Old Church with a Cemetery and Reunion grounds. I went with another guy locally and we both were familiar with the place. I had never hunted it myself, but he had several times. In fact he believes a lot of people have hunted this place. In fact I watched him go over this area before I hunted it. It was loaded with Pop tops of all kinds. I even brought a few home because I had never seen some of them. I started hunting with my V3i using a 6X10 whites Eclipse. As I was hunting I became frustrated with the lack of separation, so I stopped hunting and changed my Coil to the shooter 4X6. He finished hunting the little out door table area, so I went to that area. I instantly started finding a few coins. The Liberty was found in one of the most obvious areas. Right in the walkway between the tables. Since it was so shallow and in such an obvious place along with the extreme wear, I really believe it was a recent drop. It hit so hard I first thought it was buried can and almost passed it by. Hopefully I found a Metal detecting Buddy. He seemed to be as crazy as I am about Metal Detecting these old areas.

It just goes to show how important it is to change to a smaller coil when needed to identify those good targets masked by the junk. I think we all get into the hurry mode and miss the need to slow down and change to a smaller coil or a different set up when needed to catch the good stuff. Congrats on the silver finds!!!
Another observation is that the ground around park tables and benches, especially when they are chained in place (so no one removes them)! is usually hard packed so targets don't usually sink too far and also targets stay close to the surface when clay is present as mentioned by GeorgeinSC.

Daddyflea,I found a standing liberty in about the same shape in a very similar manner. A hunting buddy of mine had suggested we hunt a local elementary school that is supposedly built where an old plantation use to stand. I of course hit the most obvious place for a coin spill first, the park benches where the teachers sit. That is where I found mine, I was sifting through the sand under the bench with my propointer and like yours it was practically on the surface.

Amazing isn't it. Mine was right in the middle of the walkway though

Great finds !

I like to find as close to mint coins as much as anyone - call it strange ... but I like digging the really worn Silver coins too.
