Standard vs Pro mode, QUESTION?

snide

Member
I have a question or a statement with a question in it somewhere I guess...lol

I can't seem to come out of standard mode....I switch over and listen to all my targets in Pro mode quite regular, and can't seem to get on the tone near as good...For instance, In standard coin mode, good crisp clear tone-high tone on coins (targets) switch over to Pro on the very same target and just get "blips" of the high tone mask with small grunts of something else, the machine is very, very busy...I ran a 25X25 area today in Pro Mode, dug a little bit of trash confusing my "tone identification". I then went back over the very same area in standard mode and pulled up many coins (good targets) that I plainly missed, a couple being deep ones...Keep in mind one setting is standard coins, iron disc 35, sensitivity 2 notches down.....Switching to Pro all settings remain exactly the same.

Everyone talks about Pro mode being quicker response time and deeper than standard, but my air test can't prove quite prove me a believer just yet, besides I am getting pretty dern efficient in standard mode if I can say so myself, which makes me quite confident, and I am accounting for my targets....so my question is two parts I guess.

A.) Anyone have an easy tip for a step I can take to help me "get along" with my Pro Mode?
B.) Is the Pro Mode hands over fist better than the Standard custom mode set up to suit the users preferences?

In closing, I am headed to VA soon, they say that is "Hot Dirt" heavy mineralization so on and so forth, never dug in such soil so any tips there would be appreciated as well...

MANY, MANY thanks in advance!!

Std mode does have a nice loud signal even on deep targets, but it doesn't see the really deep targets that Pro mode can.

Take a coin and wave it in front of the coil in Std mode. It has a loud tone but move it away from the coil until the sound goes away. Now do the same in Pro mode. The sound isn't as loud, but you'll be able to hear the coin a good 2-3" further away.

Hi,

I went to the beach today and had similar questions. Before today I've been out a handful of times just in std mode with some success- a couple nice rings and a few silver. Today the beach was real clean- no signals at all, even trash. So I tried coin pro mode for a while and turned up a out a dollar in clad.

By trying pro mode in clean ground I didn't have the frustration I had in past tries, however it took me a little longer to get used to the scratchy signal tones compared to std mode. It sounds like an out of tune radio, but I can say that the few coins that I found were a tad deeper than what I had been finding using std mode. Although I wasn't measuring I did switch back to std for comparison before digging and on a couple of quarters I didn't even get a signal in std.

I'm new to this machine and still learning. Today I discovered that in pro mode the tid and depth numbers are more consistent over a coin compared to a trash target and the tone is more stable too.
(but still nothing like tone in std mode. Still a bit scratchy.)

I'm sure with more hours in the field I will get better at interpreting the pro mode audio. I hope the scratchy sounds are normal.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for listening,

Bik

Use what works for you. This is why there are two modes. For me the Pro mode can't be beat. For others they may not like it. If your having fun and digging then all is good.

Snide ,
I have found that when running the coil CLOSE TO THE GROUND that a good coin that is not that deep will sound off like iron is in the hole .......If you run your coil a little bit higher ( which is something I don't normally do ) it will go back to a coin tone .....I can't say for sure , but perhaps the power of the Pro mode overdrives the AT Pro into giving you an iron tone when the target is too close ? ...... You will notice that targets that are further away , will sound off nicely in Pro mode ...... Try adjusting your coil distance and see what happens .....Jim

From my understanding , the dirt in VA has Red Clay in it that basically the better machines to run down there are multi frequency machines .....The AT Pro will basiclly run very HIGH in G.B. to try to handle this soil ...... Not sure if it will work down there but give it a shot .....If you have a buddy with a Multi Frequency machine that you can borrow , DO SO ....Let me also say, and be very UP FRONT , that this is PURE SPECULATION as I have NEVER been down there to hunt ..Just going by what I have heard ..... Try to find some folks who have already hunted down that way ....Try some clubs in the area .....JIm

I think this helps point out the difference between what people report about different detectors.

The loud clear sound you hear in Std mode is typical for shallow coins in good ground conditions. The sound you hear in Pro mode is more like the sound you should be listening for to indicate a deep coin in more difficult conditions.

I believe this partly explains the contradictions we see from different users of the same detector. Those expecting to hear that loud clear sound will only get that on more shallow targets which is why they will say they are only getting 5-6" on a detector. Those that are used to dealing with the faint iffy signals of deep targets will say they get more like 8-10" on the same detector.

Snide,
The difference in pro mode to me is a bit more sensitivity and depth. Deep targets will give a quieter signal letting you know they are deep. Pro makes you really listen for a deepie. I like it myself. I like the added info it gives.

Very good feedback folks and I truly appreciate it...How bout the red dirt? Anybody on here own or use an AT Pro in the heavy mineralization type soil?

i use mine in heavy black sand in arizona in the pro zero mode & it works great :detecting:

I presently live in Williamsburg VA and formerly Fredericksburg VA. I have an eTrac and an AT Pro. The AT Pro works great on silver, relics and at the beach. No issues here - pulled four silver dimes, one indian, seven wheats and two silver quarters today in 3 hours - all from a location that I had beat to death with the eTrac!

That's just the kinda assurance I was looking for!! Thanks Shayne!!

If ya don't mind me asking how are you running your AT Pro in that soil? Pro Mode I assume, but where are your settings as far as sensitivity and Iron discrimination?
