Standard mode vs Pro mode, pin pointing and headphones

Hello all, not a new member but a new AT Pro owner, well kinda sorta. I had gotten one of these about a year ago and sold it before I really got the chance to use it because I was more than a bit put off by the ergonomics about attaching the coil, headphones(Tight space to thread them on) and not to cause offense, it seemed kinda "cheap" as far as build quality/materials. Also was on a bit of tear trying out new machines almost every few weeks to find my cup of tea. Long story short, have come full circle and am actually out hunting with the AT Pro and for the life of me, cannot figure out what got into me last year as I'm liking it this time around. Must have been because I came from using a Whites DFX and an M6 which are built like tanks and very solid and sturdy in their construction. Very heavy though as a downside.

Anyway, got a hunt in with the AT Pro the other day and was not using any headphones as I tend to sometimes do. Needless to say, with the modulated audio of Pro mode, I was not able to hear so well so I hunted in standard mode for most of my time as those sounds rang in loud and clear. I would get a promising signal with the standard mode but sometimes switch over to pro mode for a better idea of what was down there. Pro mode seems to be....noisy. Lots of spitting and sputtering going on and I wondered if that was normal or not and why hunt in that mode? Then I hit a really trashy area loaded with different signals and the standard mode got to be a little "over-loaded". I swapped to pro mode and was able to "pick out" good, solid signals from all the spitting, sputtering and trash. Does anyone else hunt in standard mode or is it just recommended for my case, to hear better when preferring not to wear headphones? I also had some trouble pin pointing. I watched the videos on Garrett's site and preferred to PP off the toe of the machine, problem with that was in trashy areas, the tone would continue to "draw out" as my coil was backing off of my intended target and into another target, making that style not work out for me on many targets. The signal strength, center of the coil method was also tricky as it seemed difficult to get that just right. I would think I had it pin pointed and be right on top of it, dead center of the coil but my hole would turn into a much larger one as I discovered the target several inches forward or back from where I thought I was getting the strongest signal, so I was missing the sweet spot somehow. Any more pin pointing tips or techniques y'all can lay on me and how about that standard vs pro mode? Also, anyone have the waterproof headphones that they use for both land and water? Was wanting to pick up a pair but hear they are a bit loud unless you can figure out how to modify them. Thanks!

Hello Habanero welcome. To start with try to get used to the pro mode. It's the deepest and will give you better finds and more target info. I personally hate hunting with headphones
But some people like using them . Now at the beach I will use them because its kinda noisy there with the waves. It's a awesome machine I've found 4 rings in a months ownership 3 of them gold. Now the head phones it comes with are fine for general hunting and water hunting at beaches or lakes you just can't submerge them. Now for pin pointing the easiest way
To pinpoint is move the coil forward then back then left then right. On the target . It should fade in all directions and your target will be the first square cut out on the coil. It is normal
For it to make some noises when in pro mode. The machine is reading all the metals around the coil . Just keep an eye and ear out for good targets don't worry about the scratchy or
Broken targets. there usually trash. Try hunting pro mode zero iron disc 30 sensitivity 1 notch from max. Learn the audio tones and id display and read your owners book several times over it will help a lot . also ground balance before you hunt . Good luck and happy hunting .

Hey Habanero, welcome back to the AT-PRO family. I'm not going to address the STANDARD and PRO Mode, I just know that I run mine in PRO Zero Mode, Zero Discrimination, Iron Audio "Off"...always have. Yes she is a chatty kathy...but for me that is ok, I have good hearing and I hunt by sound most of the time, rarely paying any attention to the VDI numbers. I mostly water hunt so the control box is often under the water...so I have to hunt by sound, PRO mode just "Tells" me more about the target. Now the Waterproof headphone issue I will make my recommendation. I own both the Official "Blue" Garrett waterproof headphones and the "Grey Ghost" waterproof headphones with the AT-PRO connector on it. I first tried the "Blue" Garretts and I could not stand them...they blew my ears off, used them 1 time...now they sit on the shelf. Some suggested to put some foam or other things in them to baffle the sound...but I never tired it. The volume, pitch, and sound quality to me were not acceptable. When the "Grey Ghost" with the AT-PRO connector got released I jumped all over them...love my other Grey Ghost headphones! The sound is much better....MUCH better!! They are not as loud and the sound quality is richer...not to mention they are more comfortable to wear.

Thanks for the tips, I may have to start using the headphones to really focus in on the pro mode sounds. I often hunt with someone and we talk back and forth requiring taking them off to hear each other. So far I'm impressed but if I can master the pin pointing then that will speed up recovery and leave a smaller "foot print". The gray ghosts are my preference but I think chuck at Indian nations is the only supplier and he sure wants a pretty penny for them! So price being a heavy consideration is why I was looking at the Garrett's. Too bad they are so loud and you can tell such a difference in quality.

My GG did not come from Indian N. and they were not spliced like those are. Mine was custom made with an actual AT-Pro adapter completely rewired and resealed...looks just like it was wired from the factory. I went back and tried to find them so I could PM you, but the seller does not have the headphones listed anymore...!?! You could make your own cheaper if you wanted to go the spliced route. The only part that is hard to find is the actual AT-Pro adapter, but if you search I'm sure you could find someone selling a used or broken pair of standard AT-Pro headphones, the adapter is sure to be good.

If I knew what I was doing and had the grey ghosts then sacrificing my regular Garrett headphones wouldn't bother me a bit. Keep me in mind if you see that the seller or anyone else has them for a good deal. Til then when summer is here, just gotta keep my head above water!

The Standard headphones are pretty hardy....I have taken waves over the neck 6 times and had to dump water out of the ear cuffs. The speaker got wet and the sound was alittle wierd for about a day until they dried out...but they are still going strong. I have been caught in downpoors with them on...did not bother them. The only thing I have not done is drop them completely in the water...that might do them in.:lmfao: Even though I have the GG, I prefer the sound of the standard headphones so I don't change them out very often.

That may be what I do for the time being. If I accidentally dunk them and they crap out, I am out practically nothing as they came with the detector. Have some Sun Ray Pro Golds but would need to buy the adapter or find a link to a mod to make my own adapter and sacrifice the Garrett phones. Seems that the Grey Ghosts are they way to go as far as waterproof headphones but those will have to wait. I was sad to discover they also do not have any volume controls to them. What is it with underwater detectors and the lack of volume control? Is it likely weak link for water to leak maybe? I have seen a mod to add the volume control to the Garrett waterproof headphones but I hear they are uncomfortable to wear. I'm looking for a headphone that is quality and comfortable to wear both on land, in the water and underwater with volume control; sadly it does not seem to exist unless perhaps modding the Grey Ghosts with a volume control. How are those on volume anyway in their stock form anyway? Anyone do their own mod by splicing in the garrett connector if I get them unwired from Detector Pro?
