stainless tip scoop mod

Has anyone attached a stainless steel tip on their alum. Long handle watet scoop...and if so..what method...? Thanks....!

BB, I just ordered an RTG aluminum scoop and am going to put the S/S tip on myself . Most tips are 14 or 16 gauge, although 14 gauge is OK , I'm going to use 12 gauge, ( .1046 ). The main reason I wanted to put it on myself is using the heavier gauge and I wanted a round tip instead of a square tip.

This is what I'm going to do..... Make a template of the tip with the layout out for the holes, two rows, 7 in a row. I plan on using solid S/S rivets, 3/16" dia. x 5/16", round head rivets.

However, the first thing I plan on doing is to use aluminum rivets to secure the entire tip. Then, drilling them out one at a time and insert the S/S rivets.

The stainless lip will be on the inside, so what I plan on doing is to run the rivet up from the bottom and the portion sticking through the stainless will be consumed by tig welding. It would be difficult to try and fit the S/S rivets one at a time, but with the aluminum pop rivets fit-up will be a lot easier.

If you are not a welder, no problem....just use stainless pop rivets in place of the aluminum.

I should have my scoop Monday and I will post some pictures after completion.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

BB, I received my scoop today and got started on making/ installing a S/S lip. First, I thought I would need 7 rivets in each row, well, three in the front row and five in the rear is all that is necessary for what I am doing.

I wanted to use 12 gauge, but the shop didn't have what I wanted in any small pieces, and was reluctant to cut into a large sheet unless I was going to pay $50.00 and keep the size width he cut. I had a piece of sch 10 , 6" S/S pipe at home and decided to go with it. It already had the radius I wanted and although I thought it may be overkill at first, I'm really going to like it. However 12 gauge still would have been my first choice.

Another thing that is very important. When you make your template and lay out the holes, ONLY DRILL THE HOLES IN THE STAINLESS LIP and drill them all. When you put your lip into the scoop and clamp it in, drill one hole at a time, starting in the center, and rivet it. Work from the center outward being sure the lip is tight against the scoop, ( I used deep throat vice grips ).

I'm going to have to order some different S/S rivets now that I am using heavier material , ( .135 ) but after making this post, I will go down and pop rivet it in place using aluminum rivets. As stated in my earlier post, I will remove these one at a time, install the solid rivets and weld them in place.

I should have the rivets in a couple days and will post a picture of the finished scoop.

I drilled and screwed in a SS lip on mine. I had used rivets in the past but they get loose and break eventually. What I did was clamp the SS metal onto the aluminum lip and then trace the outline of the point I want. Then I drill hole for my screws and then tap the holes (which makes a threading for the screws. Put the screws in and then mill off the excess with a grinder. Once its secured, cut the lines of the point you want. Then file it down to bet rid of burs and sharp ends. I can send you a pic of what mine looks like if that would help. Just PM me

Good idea...i already rivited mine....will redrill, tap, and screw if/when it comes loose...thanks for the idea....!
