Stainless steel what's it?

My brother found this item and we have not been able to identify it ... some have thought it is part of a coffee maker but I'd appreciate other opinions. The straight part of the item is a "spring". I have attached two photos ... one closed position and one open position.

Thanks!

Not 100% sure but it looks like a safety pin that's used on aircraft to lock doors in place while your working around certain areas and they usually have a bright red streamers attached to them so you don't forget to remove them after your done working.
