STABILITY PROBLEM ON A MINELAB SOVEREIGN.............

John(H)

.................In normal hunting, swinging the coil back and forth my Sovereign is great, threshold is easy to adjust and the tones are easy to hear and interpret!!................HOWEVER.............as soon as i get a target and lay the detector on the ground so I can dig the target..............the tones and threshold goes crazy like a Xylophone...................this continues until I pick up the detector and start searching again...............the tones and threshold all go back to normal until I lay down the detector again for another target to dig!!.................Any ideas on what can be causing this??.......I have also changed Batteries and it continues to act up like this ..................no matter if it has used or fresh batteries!!..............JOE

Are you carrying a cell phone or pinpointer or leaving on the all metal after pinpointing which could be the problem along with a host of other problems. Do check out all your connections, clean batterry terminals, put in new batteries. Also trying another coil is an option if a fellow has a clubmember or dealer with another coil...

It also maybe your sensitivity is up high, thus when you lay the detector down the coil is facing up or off the ground. I ALWAYS have that problem and just deal with it now.

as far as i know this is totally normal when laying down as the coil is often pointing skyward or at some wierd angle and the detector doesnt know whats going on ///well mine does that and is of no concern to me ,i just turn it off while its layed down

By placing the coil on the ground it may just be picking up another target near by. You are changing the ground balance if you are in Track too. I suspect however that it could be the just the change in metal around the detector. If it was your cell phone it would affect the GT while in normal hunting too.

.............On a closer inspection................I found that the grounding wire (the black wire) that is connected to the plug that plugs into the battery had broken loose!! So I re-sodered it back together and basicly solved the problem! Evidently while i was swinging the coil the wire was in contact but when placed on the ground it wasn't in contact!! Some of the other posts made sense too......................sometimes when I place the detector on the groumd it winds up on its side and the coil is trying to analyze.....................the air................since this machine is always analyzing the soil...............so on its side the detector may be confused and so that is the reason for all of the Xylophone type sounds!!..................................Or that is the way that I see it..............LOL............JOE

worst thing about laying detector on its side is sand can get in controls .....a worse problem than a few squawks
i found seperating the control box bakes it so much better to lay down ..i just have a collecting pouch from my bounty hunter that the box fits into quite well with a small hole cut into it to allow the cord to go in .
if you cant buy a mine lab pouch just use whatever or get the wife to sew one up .

sure beats laying the control box in sand plus adjustments are so much easier i usually wear it so box is on belt in center of my body as it is comfortable and easy to get at
