ss beach scoop modification

New member
i purchased a ss beach scoop and it is like carrying a 16 pound maul, looking for some advice on cutting the ss handle off and replacing it with either a wooden or fiberglass handle.........

thx for your help.............

wood or fiberglass will be heavier than stainless steel!
sell the one you have and buy aluminum with a stainless steel tip at the digging lip or use the one you have until you get used to it.
can you post pics of your scoop? what brand/model is it?
chuck.

Don't cut the handle off that is part of the cost of the scoop. I tend to drag my scoop behind me and don't actually carry it. In the dry and wet sand this will leave a trail so you know where you have searched. I also have a rope tied to my scoop which is a break down travel type where the handle comes apart. this is where I put two bolts with an open eye on one end. I put the rope through here like a sling. This way I can carry the scoop slung over my shoulder. You can also use the rope to drag the scoop.

Stainless scoops are good all around but lots of guys tend to use the heavier stainless scoop in the water where it acts as an anchor and stabilizer which you need at times with the wave action.

Is your scoop the style with the perforated round holes. If so it is really a water scoop. Dry/wet sand beach scoops tend to have wire mesh baskets which are lighter and sift faster. I use my water scoop on the beach but really never pick the thing up very far. find a signal dig and flip - kick pile with foot check hole and pile and repeat till target found. Then dig only the target and lift.

So I would look into another lighter scoop with wire mesh if your primarily a dry/wet sand hunter and keep the stainless as a back up and for the water. I can't imagine a beach hunt with a broken scoop.

That's one of the pluses of beach hunting with a long handled scoop no bending over and no deep knee bends:clapping:

I i bought it off ebay , it has a sticker on it tha says " reilly's treasured gold ",pompano beach florida. Yes it is a water scoop and that is where i intend to use it as well as in the wet sand but as i said it very heavy and I have seen alot of scoops that have appeared to have been modified with either a fiberglass or wooden handles. i can't believe that wood or fiberglass would be as heavy or heavier then stainless steel. I've also considered drilling additional wholes in the scoop to reduce weight and increase sifting times. I apreciate all your input.........hh

Reilly's is a top name scoop so you have a good one. A heavy scoop can really be an asset in the surf. Those scoops get even heavier with a full load of sand and mud. That being said I will dig my target and leave the scoop on the bottom and away from the hole then recheck the hole. If the target is still in the hole repeat. This way your not lifting every scoop of mud which turns into a real workout.

The scoops your are talking of with wooden fibre glass handles are generally sold as the scoop only and are designed to accept these handles which you purchase later at the hardware store I guess. Looks like the T-Rex is this type of scoop.

You might try a search and locate one of these style scoops if that's what you want and sell the one you have. your could also look for one with a wire mesh basket but it will probably not hold up as long as the one with the punched holes. I have one 5" diam wire mesh scoop that's steel not even stainless. My brother beefed up the back end and reinforced the sides with some rebar and it works pretty good in our rocky bottom river sites.

I just bought the T-Rex stainless steal scoop and I have a ash wooden handle and it seems to be as strong as they come. Check out this site and you will see it along with many others. This may be the one that you are looking for.
