Yesterday evening I arrived at Spring Lake to work the 10 cell phones we had. Each person gets to make a 10 minute phone call. Last night was the first night so not really a lot of business. I'm sure word will travel fast. I got to witness mothers reuniting with their kids and everyone would be crying like babies! I also saw people how were trying to call New Orleans and who could not get through. Most people wanted to call FEMA but all the circuits were overloaded. Today we are sitting up a table just for FEMA calls,(These calls will take longer than 10 minutes.)
One lady's sister in coming to get her today from Indiana. Another lady last night was still trying to locate 2 of here kids. All the people making calls were very grateful. I'll be back tonight to man the phones from 6-8pm. What a blessing it is to be a part of this; To see the looks in their eyes and the smiles on their faces when they finally get in touch with a loved one!
I left the phones after talking to Willie and James, searching for Tim and Ricklyn. I found them sitting on the deck of the dormitory adoring their new fishing rods.(Fishing rods and sacks of "stink bait" were being donated and passed out everywhere). It was at that moment that I met a man named Ray.
Ray was there by himself and didn't have any family or friends anywhere, except for his kids that he hadn't seen in a long while. He was alone, but determined to start over. That is all he wanted, just like Irene, another person who happened to be there. I then ask the question that I ask all of them; "What is one thing you would want if you could have it?" Irene immediately replied, "MY Salvation." I ask her if she had it yet and she assured me that she did.
Ray told me that he'd really like to have a steak, but I reminded him that there would probably be a riot if I got caught bringing him one so he opted for a Sony Walkman. He really enjoys the 50s music. While I was talking to Ray, I could feel him opening up to me more so than the others. He talked more about the hurricane. "Me and two other guys swam 4 blocks before we made it to high ground, and that was through all the riptides and everything," he said.
As Irene and I were talking, Ray was intently listening. I was telling them that Our God is a loving God and everyone agreed. No one was holding a grudge against Jesus. HOSANNA! Some blamed George Bush, some blamed one of the Senators from La., Some blamed FEMA, but none so far have blamed themselves. I hope the people of New Orleans hear what God is saying to them.
Riclyn gave me her list of not at all very much stuff, which included a pocket book, lighters, girl stuff, phone number and address book, and earrings. When I told my sister, Linda, she told me that she would like to help so Linda pitched in and got Ricklyn a few things. I will be taking Ricklyns stuff to her and Ray's walkman to him.
I expect the phones to be busy tonight so I better get ready to go. Sorry this is so long. More tomorrow.
God Bless,
