Spectrum XLT Coils Question

C E Stricklin

New member
I have a Spectrum XLT and a Eagle Spectrum that I have had since they were first introduced, the Eagle Spectrum in the 80s, and the Spectrum XLT in the early 90s if my memory serves me right. Both have the stock 9 1/2 in rainbow coil. I also have a Blue Max 350 Snooper coil, a Blue Max 600 Deepscan coil and a 11 1/2 in Hot Head Professional Coil. I exchange the coils between the two detectors, except for the Hot Head ( I was never happy with its performance from the day I received it from Kellyco). I also have other brands of detectors that I regularly use, but these are my two main GO TO detectors. I would like some info as to other coils I could purchase to expand and or improve the performance of both detectors or at least the Spectrum XLT. Also what is the difference between the Blue Max 600 Deepscan and the Bullseye 5.3 as they appear to be similar in size.

I also want to post about the excellent service I recently received on my Spectrum XLT from Robert at Centreville Electronics (White's Southeast Service Center). I had an issue with the on/off touchpad not working. He corrected that problem, did some upgrades, cleaned the inside, tuned it to the 9 1/2 in coil I sent in with the unit, all in an excellent turn around time and at a reasonable fair price.

Tried to edit to add additional info about the type of hunting I do but would not let me so I am adding it as a reply to my original post.

I primarily hunt old sites, dating from colonial times thru the early 1900s. On a new site, I usually do a preliminary search with one of my other brand detectors with discrimination set high enough to eliminate small aluminum items (strange how this newer metal shows up in quantity on old remote sites). After I narrow down a good search area I go back with the GO TO detectors set up with different coils and do a thorough search, digging all signals (many many times I have located good targets after removing the trash targets that were masking them), I hunt the same sites for months or sometimes years, adding new sites but returning to old sites where I have found really good items.

If my memory serves me correctly...........they are both the same coils..........just different names. The 5.3 is actually the same size and function as the BlueMax 600. Both operate on the same frequency also, 6.59Khz. Memory is tricky as one gets older:)
I use a Teknetics T2, but if I find a promising area, after using the T2, I go over it with my White's Silver Eagle (a Spectrum minus the advanced software programming).

I would suggest the 4x6, it separates well. If they make an 8x6 SEF in 6.59, it would be a good coil. I love the SEF on my DFX & SE PRO.
