Special Detecting Situation with Square Nails

Tony N (Michigan)

On this farm I used to live on, it goes back to around the early 1830's. The first house was torn down board by board with the nails ending up in the yard and a new house built from that.

I have never found a coin here dating back to the 1800's.

Today during lunch (my office is still at this farm house) I detected it with my Explorer (my Sov. GT has not arrived yet) and I was digging square nails. I dig anything here if it is just a little out of the ordinary on my smart screen and sounds.

When I get my GT I am curious how you'd set it up to hunt in this square nail hell.

Set the sensitivity in auto until you know the GT better, disc off or very low as the GT hate iron in disc and you may get some false signals, but once you have heard a few you will know them. Notch is off too as you don't need this at this time. Run a threshold so you can hear the nulling of iron so you know if you are going too fast. listen for repeatable signals and try to get the meter to read as high as it can by just swinging the coil over just the target, it will look like kind of a wiggle.
When you get your GT I would recommend the auto sensitivity and going to a area where it is not so much iron or trash to give you a chance to get to know the GT, just make sure there are good targets there too.
