Spanked a Tesoro Cortez today...

Parkit

New member
Hit a YMCA camp today, beating the crap out of my hunting buddy with his Tesoro. He needs to get rid of that hunk of junk and get a Garrett, then he can stop whining about me finding everything.

This ring showed up, and it would have me salivating if it was in a gold setting instead of .925. LOOKS nice...

This earring looks sterling, but I've never seen these marks. I can't make out if it's GBR, 95R or what even with a magnifying glass, any ideas??

I got 75 clad and pennies, and this thing made my heart skip a beat:

Until I took a closer look then flipped it over:

...some kind of token, little larger than a quarter.

Steve

That mint mark "HH" on that token is for HH [Hoffman & Hoffman, before 1999], a token maker.
This information is from the site Forrest's Token Site

Great looking ring and token. I have had that happen a few times to me. They need to make a law against putting eagles and stars on non coin items.

Yes, I would have preferred it be a seated or bust quarter, which it appeared to be for about one nanosecond when I dug it up. Thanks for the token info, too, that's neat!

Nice looking stuff there. Is there any printing on the token? I like the looks of that. Don't know what to tell you about the GBR or whatever. Dandy looking ring. How long has your buddy used his Tesoro? Maybe he hasn't mastered it yet.

Bill

No printing on the token other than the HH mint marks and the fancy S. My bud has been using the Tesoro for quite a while, and he's more than mastered it. It's just the difference in our hunting styles, really. He fixates on a small area every place we go and milks it for all it's worth, which is sometimes zero. I on the otherhand will hit what I think are going to be the hotspots first, give those a good shot, then move on quickly until I determine what "type" of area I'm going to be hunting in. I figure that with him being methodical on a small section and me covering lots of ground quickly, it's going to become apparent within an hour whether it's going to be A: high-quality finds (old silver mostly) and very little modern clad or B: almost all shallow clad or newer drops with a very low chance at old coins. Today it became clear that the YMCA camp had been hit hard in the past because the prime-looking areas held no deep or older coins (he is very unlikely to miss anything), but there was a decent amount of clad and Memorial cents in areas like in front of the camp store, around play equipment and well-used common areas. If he had started pulling silver with his approach (and that has happened plenty of times before) I would have switched tactics to match his method and gone after the old stuff. Today he was the one to eventually switch to my method, but by then I had already uncovered the ring, earring and a decent amount of clad.
He likes his Tesoro and he DOES know how to use it. He's been in the game longer than I have and if we were to compare total finds I'd look like an idiot. That's why I enjoy beating his game so much and crow about it whenever it happens. I've gone behind him and found stuff, he's gone behind me and found stuff, just like what has happened to everyone else. Today he got practically skunked because he was convinced he'd find silver and didn't want to switch tactics, and I figured early on in the day that whatever clad and shallow drops I could find in the hotspots were my best shot.
Next week it could be different, he could find 3 Barbers while I'm busy picking zincs off the top under the swings somewhere. It works for us, and usually one or the other is going to find whatever there is to find.

Actually Awhitster answered that with his "Hoffman and Hoffman" reply, but I'll take Happy Hunting any day also!

From the land of the Bluenose.....nice silver "O" and glad to see Team Green save the day.

Have a hunting bud who swings a Minelab.....usually out gun him 5 to 1 but he does get the deeper stuff by far. Must be the craters he has to dig to locate the target...lol!
