Spanish silver

Great Republic

I stopped at a wooded area that I had been driving by for years. This morning I decided to stop there and take a look. The trees there are not very old so it was most likley a field at some point. The first thing that I found was the copper whatsit. (If anyone can ID it that would be great)! The second was the ox knob. The third and last thing that I found was the cut piece of a Spanish 8 reale. The visable part of the date is a 9 and the other number looks like the top of an 8 or 9. That would make this coin either 1689 or 1699. WOW!!! Two firsts for me. Spanish colonial silver and the 1600 mark!! It was almost 7" deep and the Exp2 hit loud and clear. Though that it was part of a pulltab when I saw it in the dirt.:clapping:

Nice find - good that you a piece with a partial date. Congrats.

Thanks, and I was thinking that it could also be a 1609,1629, or 1639 but still the oldest coin that I have ever found. Although it seems more consistant with the 1689/99 design.

Clyde, you are the man !! What a way to get back into detecting!!
Cut Spanish silver is one of the top items on my wish list.

Thanks Mike,
What a surprise it was. Next on my list is the whole coin:thumbup: That piece does look like a latch of some sort. Almost looks like some sort of gun piece. I think that there is an area where something broke off on the blunt end. HH
