Is there much difference between the old and new sovereigns as far as performance goes? Is the GT better? thanks....

Hey John i have only owned a Sov GT now 2.5 years but for the last few years i have read a lot of material on the Sovereign,s made since 1991 it seems the GT is the best made but there is a few who will debate that who know there older machine,s very well , here is a older review on the Sovereign i found this might help GH Jim

I have used all the different models of the Sovereigns and each one is different with the XS and the XS2 the only difference was the hook up for the battery and the XS2 came with the waterproof coil where the XS and the original had the coinsearch coil we all love. Performance wise I feel they were the same. The XS2a didn't seem to get the depth I was getting with the others, but could be I never went over anything deep. The Elite had a much better battery system, but the controls we were used too got changed around so for many of us that were used to the older Sovereigns had a problem turning the wrong control. I also felt the coins sounded deeper than they actually were compared to the older Sovereigns, so I tried a couple more Elites and they too were the same and wondered if they were not as sensitive as the others were. Now the GT has many changes to it and I feel it is the most sensitive Sovereign Minelab made as the targets are better sounding and seems to hear more falsing on iron, but if you know your Sovereign it is no problem at all as you can tell the difference.
Each model Sovereigns are great and will do better than most detectors on the market hands down, but for many starting with a Sovereign may not see the difference on a older one or a newer ones until you get to know your Sovereign well and what it is telling you. To me the XS was the easiest to use with the 8 inch Coinsearch coils and the GT is the best Sovereign and has the best 10 inch coil Minelab has ever made.

Rick,

Nice, concise, comprehensive overview there.... I'm getting my first GT soon, and looking forward to it, and "re-hunting" some sites I have been to and "cleaned out" (uh huh, really, I did - multiple times even).

You will find more good stuff at sites you've "cleaned out" with your previous detectors and that others have pounded as well. I've gone back to some sites I've hunted with every machine I've ever owned, including my Explorers, and got more good stuff with my GT. Some of these finds won't even be all that deep. I've dug a standing liberty quarter at about 7" deep at a small site I had completely gridded with my Explorers. Can't understand how I missed it with them because I had gridded it several times. I think it was standing on end and the Sovereign likes coins on end (even more so if using an SEF coil). At one particular spot around a large tree I had gridded with my Explorers several times and yet I was popping wheat pennies about 8" deep left and right with my Sovereign. My Explorers seemed to max out at about 7 to 8" in my high mineral sites, while I have dug coins much deeper with my GT.

Don't pass up shallow "clad" signals either because your Sovereign will find old coins on end or mixed in iron or other trash that are shallow, yet other machines were unable to find them.
