Sovereign XS vs GT

SWMO Mark

New member
Just traded for a nice XS. I was wondering if there was much difference in depth between it and the GT. Are there any major differences in performance between the two detectors? Thanks, Mark

The XS is one of my favorite Sovereigns and does a great job, some will say it is the Best Sovereign made, but once you get to really know the Sovereigns you probably couldn't tell the difference with the GT other than the XS runs a bit smoother.
Myself I don't need the silent search which the GT has a toggle switch to change, I don't run all metal for detecting as I find in disc I get more depth and easy to tell the good targets from the bad, so on the GT I have that option of running all metal. The freq switch is nice on the GT if you get some electrical interference or cross talk from another Sovereign as you can change the freq a little. Also you have the option of turning the iron mask on or off on the GT where the XS has it on all the time. The difference is in iron mask on is if there is a piece of iron close to a good target you may get a signal letting you know it is something to check out more where as off it would probably just null, but in some trashier areas it could be good with it off and do some cherry picking of the good targets that are not close to iron.
With the GT it is a bit more sensitive and do see more falsing, but once you get used to it you will be able to tell the falsing from the good targets most of the time.
The XS should have a battery pack that has a wire plugged into it, so becarefull when you pull the wire off as it can break easily, the black cover on the plug come off easy and will pull off a wire. I just grab the plug closer to where it connect with the metal when I pull it off. Most I got in to my shop and those I sold back then I would put heat shrink on the black part and seen that some would get on the metal part, then heated it up so it wouldn't pull apart. Surprising there is still a rechargeable battery made for the XS style, but not for the XS2 or XS2a that had the drop in battery pack.
The original XS came with a 8 inch coinsearch coil and I hope the one you are getting has one as they are the best coil to learn a Sovereign with in my opinion, but these coils are not waterproof so you cant submerge them in water like BBS coils that were used on the XS2 and the XS2a.
One thing is the XS would be the detector I would want if I didn't have the GT as it does great once you get to know it and feel the GT is a bit more sensitive and can do more with it if you needed to, but for most of my detecting the XS would work just fine. If you find you like the XS and know it and wants a little more option and sensitivity you can always resell the XS as they still seem to sell well and buy a GT.

Mark, both are great detectors.I agree with Rick's post the GT does have advantages. My XS-2 was converted back into a single power plug.Very easy to make an alkaline pack and a rechargeable pack for this older Sovereign.Any one would do well with either one of these detectors and I believe a more experience user will get more out of the GT.I like the older XS-2 for gold rings better than the GT.Good Luck Ron

The XS is one of my favorite Sov versions and like Rick mentioned it came with the coinsearch coil. Id grab one if I could find a nice one, found a lot of gold with that model. if you can get a nimh pack for it(dont know if sunray still makes them) that will give you a heck of a long hunt time:thumbup:

Thanks for all the info. My XS came with a Sunray 8" coil. Is this a pretty good coil for really trashy sites or should I look for something smaller? Thanks, Mark

The S-8 is also one of my favorite coils and seem to be better in trashier site then any other 8 inch coil. I feel the hot band is smaller so it can get between trash better from my experience and seen some deeper coin pick up better too, but do recommend the 8 inch coinsearch for those learning the Sovereign as the tones seem longer and easier to hear.
I wish I had the serial number of the XS I sold that had the Sun Ray 8 inch coil on it to see if it the same one, if it was than you would have the Sovereign that should be in the hall of fame as it got over 500 silver coins and many gold rings, it also was the one that made the 1999 Minelab info book. It was my old demo back in 1997 and sold it to a guy in 1998 and this guy made history with that XS around here.

Good Luck as you have the detector that will do the job for you.

Rick
