Sovereign XS Rod Mod ?

I know the Sov is pretty unergonomic with the stock S-rod setup, and the trick towards better balance seems to be to get the control box behind the arm cuff, which I see done with custom rods a lot.

A seller that makes rods and stands is also making an extension that fits into the back of the stock S-rod, allowing one to mount the Sov control box back a bit further for better balance. Here's a pic of his setup:

The extension comes with the "V" clip attached, and only cost $18 delivered. It looks like a good idea, and can be had in black to match the stock Sov/XS rod.

Has anyone tried one of these?

Unergonomic is an understatement. The stock s-rods suck !!!!
With that mod, the balance may be better, but the hand grip is still at a bad angle.
What would be good is a straight rod with a hand grip that can be swiveled and locked to the best position for the user.

That's one of PLUGGER'S Straight Shafts!! I have one of my SOV-GT, and they are VERY WELL MADE, they come with an EXCELLENT STAND that KEEPS your Control Box Well OFF THE GROUND, and WELL WORTH the MONEY!! HH, Les Robinson

Hey Less, thanks for the feedback, I appreciate that. How's the weight compared to the stock shaft ? It does look like a nice setup, put a remote pinpoint switch on the handle and your set.

That looks good, but most of the ones Plugger makes are silver colored shafts. His new one has the better hand grip as it has a Allen wrench to adjust the handle forward or backwards plus it can be angled for the best balance. I got one of the new ones and was having problem getting it to balance being I had the S-1 probe on it too, so he started building the extensions to move the control box back and that helped a lot.
First time I got to know Plugger was a used Sovereign I had bought that had one of his shafts on it and it felt lighter than the stock one and I posted a picture of it and he responded and told me the hand grip was adjustable so when you change coils you can move the hand grip for better balance.I put on my 8 inch coinsearch and had it balanced so nice it almost felt weightless. When adding the S-1 probe it became heavier and by moving the control box back on the extension shaft made it better.

Pluggers shafts sound like a good "upgrade" (he makes them in silver or black, your choice, but the stock XS-2a shaft is black).

I'll try the extension first, and if it's a clustermuck I'll go for the shaft upgrade.

Your VERY WELCOMED, Cal!! I actually got out hunting for the first time, since I got my new Plugger SOV-GT Straight Shaft, and I hunted for almost (4) hrs. straight with it, and DID NOT GET TIRED!! The GT Shaft's have the Control Box mounted behind the Armcup, so that the balance is EXCELLENT!! I also have the SunRay DTI-III Meter mounted on top of the SunRay S-1 Probe Control Box, which is probably Not the Best Set-Up, but it works for me! But more important is the fact that I HAVE RHUEMATORY ARTHRITIS, and I was able to hunt all that time without burning my arm out!! Take care and BEST of LUCK, hh, Les Robinson
