Sovereign XS or GT... Still not sure which one for Beach?

I have an older Sovereign XS which seems to work just fine. For beach work, I want to use 15" WOT coil. Should I sell the XS and purchase a GT? The GT will ground balance in all-metal. So in theory the GT should do better in all-metal mode than my XS? But in discriminate mode, they should be about the same, right?

How many SOV users hunt the beach in all metal mode as their primary search mode? Would the GT then be the better machine?

From what I read the GT is not a good prospecting machine for small nuggets. So I would not count on the GT as also my prospecting detector.

Are there any (older machine) Sovereign users who upgraded to the GT for beach detecting and found the GT to be better?

Also, is the all-metal mode on Sovereigns and Excaliburs a single frequency at a fixed ground balance? If not, then why on the GT with BBS would one need a ground balance, since a BBS detector does not balance to ground?

Thanks, CC

I have a Sovereign Gt. Seems to work good for me in the discriminate mode. I had a welding rod, and about 2 dozen nails, right on the surface. the detector was going wild in al metal mode. In the discriminate mode it went silent.

As far as prospecting I can't help you.

Maybe try looking at this link...http://www.garysdetecting.co.uk/sovgt.htm

Have a good day

I know nothing about the GT...but I've used the Sov. XS-2 for ~5 years, with the 15" WOT coil. Until lately, it has been my primary machine in just about all circumstances (I live in CT).
On saltwater beaches, especially in winter when the targets are fewer and (maybe) deeper, I always hunt in all-metal (unless there's mucho iron). It gives more depth, no question. When I get a signal, I switch to DISC., and if there's even a hint of an upscale sound, I dig! If the AM signal is very faint, and there's no DISC. tone---I dig! Sometimes the holes are pretty big (and deep!), but beach digging is usually O.K. I also listen for nulling in DISC., a sign that the target is a iron.
I assume that even in AM, it puts out 17 frequencies. I have gotten some amazingly small non-ferrous items at decent depths. I used a SUNRAY meter for years until it broke - now decided to go it by 'ear' alone. Which means I'll be digging just about everything...which means I'll be getting more gold!
